For a two-way ANOVA table, with a single observation per cell, the standard approach is to assume that interaction between the two factors is negligible, and to base inferences about the main factors on the model without interaction. But there is no totally satisfactory method for testing if interaction can be ignored. The classical approach is to specify a functional form for the interaction terms, involving a small number of parameters, and then use an appropriate test. But, such tests have low power if the functional form is inappropriate. This has led researchers to propose tests which do not assume a specific form for the interactions. In this article, we present a new approach for testing interaction which also does not assume a specific form for the interaction. This approach is fairly simple and flexible, and its usefulness is illustrated with several examples. We also present a general result which shows that there is no test of interaction with good power properties against all types of interaction.  相似文献

An explicit decomposition on asymptotically independent distributed as chi-squared with one degree of freedom components of the Pearson–Fisher and Dzhaparidze–Nikulin tests is presented. The decomposition is formally the same for both tests and is valid for any partitioning of a sample space. Vector-valued tests, components of which can be not only different scalar tests based on the same sample, but also scalar tests based on components or groups of components of the same statistic are considered. Numerical examples illustrating the idea are presented.  相似文献

An internal pilot with interim analysis (IPIA) design combines interim power analysis (an internal pilot) with interim data analysis (two-stage group sequential). We provide IPIA methods for single df hypotheses within the Gaussian general linear model, including one and two group t tests. The design allows early stopping for efficacy and futility while also re-estimating sample size based on an interim variance estimate. Study planning in small samples requires the exact and computable forms reported here. The formulation gives fast and accurate calculations of power, Type I error rate, and expected sample size.  相似文献

In this article, we consider two independent zero-inflated power series distributions and provide likelihood ratio test for equality of inflation parameters of the same. As an illustration, testing equality of inflation parameters of two zero inflated Poisson distributions is provided. Further, simulation study to investigate power of likelihood ratio tests has been carried out.  相似文献

Statistics are developed for predicting the effect of data transformations on the F statistic when the assumptions of homoscedasticity and normality underlying the AN OVA are not necessarily satisfied. These statistics are useful for determining whether and how to transform, They are developed by partitioning the change in the observed value of the jF-statistic under the transformation, into two expressions, one of which depends on the "truth" of HQ while the other does not. Using this partition, desirable properties are derived for transformations. Criteria are developed defining transformations which tend to preserve the type 1 error while increasing power when needed. Using these criteria, the notion of model robustness is introduced. It is shown that the Box-Cox methodology for selecting a power transform may, under certain conditions, produce a transformation which does not permit inferences to be made about the parent population from the transformed population. An alternative approach suggested here does permit such inferences.  相似文献

A study is made of Neyman's C(a) test for testing independence in nonnormal situations. It is shown that it performs very well both in terms of the level of significance and the powereven for smallvalues of the samplesize. Also, in the case of the bivariate Polsson distribution, itis shown that Fisher's z and Student's t transforms of the sample correlation coefficient are good competitors for Neyman's procedure.

In the present paper, the author has considered and compared the power of three test procedures, based on two preliminary tests of significance (PTS), for testing a main effect in a three factor factorial experiment. Davenport and Webster (1973) type test statistics are used in the final test. Recommendation for a suitable size of PTS has been made so that the power of a test procedure is adequately high.  相似文献

Assuming that all components of a normal mean vector are simultaneously non negative or non positive, we consider a multivariate two-sided test for testing whether the normal mean vector is equal to zero or not. Since the likelihood ratio test is accompanied with theoretical and computational complications, we discuss two kinds of approximations of the likelihood ratio test. One is based on a conservative critical value determined by a certain inequality. The other is constructed by the approximation of the likelihood ratio test proposed by Tang et al. (1989). We compare the likelihood ratio test and two kinds of approximations through numerical examples regarding critical values and the power of the test.  相似文献

A study on the robustness of the adaptation of the sample size for a phase III trial on the basis of existing phase II data is presented—when phase III is lower than phase II effect size. A criterion of clinical relevance for phase II results is applied in order to launch phase III, where data from phase II cannot be included in statistical analysis. The adaptation consists in adopting the conservative approach to sample size estimation, which takes into account the variability of phase II data. Some conservative sample size estimation strategies, Bayesian and frequentist, are compared with the calibrated optimal γ conservative strategy (viz. COS) which is the best performer when phase II and phase III effect sizes are equal. The Overall Power (OP) of these strategies and the mean square error (MSE) of their sample size estimators are computed under different scenarios, in the presence of the structural bias due to lower phase III effect size, for evaluating the robustness of the strategies. When the structural bias is quite small (i.e., the ratio of phase III to phase II effect size is greater than 0.8), and when some operating conditions for applying sample size estimation hold, COS can still provide acceptable results for planning phase III trials, even if in bias absence the OP was higher.

Main results concern the introduction of a correction, which affects just sample size estimates and not launch probabilities, for balancing the structural bias. In particular, the correction is based on a postulation of the structural bias; hence, it is more intuitive and easier to use than those based on the modification of Type I or/and Type II errors. A comparison of corrected conservative sample size estimation strategies is performed in the presence of a quite small bias. When the postulated correction is right, COS provides good OP and the lowest MSE. Moreover, the OPs of COS are even higher than those observed without bias, thanks to higher launch probability and a similar estimation performance. The structural bias can therefore be exploited for improving sample size estimation performances. When the postulated correction is smaller than necessary, COS is still the best performer, and it also works well. A higher than necessary correction should be avoided.  相似文献

The article concerns tests for normality based on the Shapiro–Wilk W statistic. The constants in the test statistic are recalculated as those given in Shapiro and Wilk are incorrect. The empirical significance levels and power of improved tests have been evaluated in simulation study and compared to original ones. The improved tests were also applied to the multivariate case. In this case, we consider two implementations of the W statistic, the first one proposed by Srivastava and Hui and the other by Hanusz and Tarasinska. Empirical size of tests and their power have been compared to the Henze–Zirkler test.  相似文献
