Multiple-response (or pick any/c) categorical variables summarize responses to survey questions that ask “pick any” from a set of item responses. Extensions to loglinear model methodology are proposed to model associations between these variables across all their items simultaneously. Because individual item responses to a multiple-response categorical variable are likely to be correlated, the usual chi-square distributional approximations for model-comparison statistics are not appropriate. Adjusted statistics and a new bootstrap procedure are developed to facilitate distributional approximations. Odds ratio and standardized Pearson residual measures are also developed to estimate specific associations and examine deviations from a specified model. 相似文献

We study bias arising from rounding categorical variables following multivariate normal (MVN) imputation. This task has been well studied for binary variables, but not for more general categorical variables. Three methods that assign imputed values to categories based on fixed reference points are compared using 25 specific scenarios covering variables with k=3, …, 7 categories, and five distributional shapes, and for each k=3, …, 7, we examine the distribution of bias arising over 100,000 distributions drawn from a symmetric Dirichlet distribution. We observed, on both empirical and theoretical grounds, that one method (projected-distance-based rounding) is superior to the other two methods, and that the risk of invalid inference with the best method may be too high at sample sizes n≥150 at 50% missingness, n≥250 at 30% missingness and n≥1500 at 10% missingness. Therefore, these methods are generally unsatisfactory for rounding categorical variables (with up to seven categories) following MVN imputation. 相似文献

Ranked set sampling (RSS) design as a cost-effective sampling is a powerful tool in situations where measuring the variable of interest is costly and time-consuming; however, ranking information about sampling units can be obtained easily through inexpensive and easy to measure characteristics at little or no cost. In this paper, we study RSS data for analysis of an ordinal population. First, we compare the problem of non-representative extreme samples under RSS and commonly-used simple random sampling. Using RSS data with tie information, we propose non-parametric and maximum likelihood estimators for population parameters. Through extensive numerical studies, we investigate the effect of various factors including ranking ability, tie generating mechanisms, the number of categories and population setting on the performance of the estimators. Finally, we apply the proposed methods to the bone disorder data to estimate the proportions of patients with osteopenia and osteoporosis status. 相似文献

In several sciences, especially when dealing with performance evaluation, complex testing problems may arise due in particular to the presence of multidimensional categorical data. In such cases the application of nonparametric methods can represent a reasonable approach. In this paper, we consider the problem of testing whether a “treatment” is stochastically larger than a “control” when univariate and multivariate ordinal categorical data are present. We propose a solution based on the nonparametric combination of dependent permutation tests (Pesarin in Multivariate permutation test with application to biostatistics. Wiley, Chichester, 2001), on variable transformation, and on tests on moments. The solution requires the transformation of categorical response variables into numeric variables and the breaking up of the original problem’s hypotheses into partial sub-hypotheses regarding the moments of the transformed variables. This type of problem is considered to be almost impossible to analyze within likelihood ratio tests, especially in the multivariate case (Wang in J Am Stat Assoc 91:1676–1683, 1996). This paper introduces two estimators, a boundary corrected minimum variance kernel estimator based on a uniform kernel and a discrete frequency polygon estimator, for the cell probabilities of ordinal contingency tables. Simulation results show that the minimum variance boundary kernel estimator has a smaller average sum of squared error than the existing boundary kernel estimators. The discrete frequency polygon estimator is simple and easy to interpret, and it is competitive with the minimum variance boundary kernel estimator. It is proved that both estimators have an optimal rate of convergence in terms of mean sum of squared error, The estimators are also defined for high-dimensional tables. 相似文献

A model developed by Andrich for ordered categorical data is extended to develop tests for treatment effects with paired or matched samples. In particular, this includes analysis for pre-post studies and crossover designs. Some advantages of this model are that it allows for misclassification of subjects, yields reasonable conditional requirements for exact analysis, a normal approximation is good for all but the smallest of sample sizes, and it is relatively simple mathematically. A score test for monotonic trend in hazard rates for grouped survival data in stratified populations
Models for monotone trends in hazard rates for grouped survival data in stratified populations are introduced, and simple closed form score statistics for testing the significance of these trends are presented. The test statistics for some of the models understudy are shown to be independent of the assumed form of the function which relates the hazard rates to the sets of monotone scores assigned to the time intervals. The procedure is applied to test monotone trends in the recovery rates of erythematous response among skin cancer patients and controls that have been irradiated with a ultraviolent challenge. 相似文献

Five tests of homogeneity for a 2x(k+l) contingency table are compared using Monte Carlo techniques. For these studiesit is assumed that k becomes large in such a way that thecontingency table is sparse for 2xk of the cells, but the sample size in two of the cells remains large. The test statistics studied are: the chi-square approximation to the Pearson test statistic, the chi-square approximation to the likelihood ratio statistic, the normal approximation to Zelterman's (1984)the normal approximation to Pearson's chi-square, and the normal approximation to the likelihood ratio statistic. For the range of parameters studied the chi-square approximation to Pearson's statistic performs consistently well with regard to its size and power. 相似文献
