Writing organization/romancing fictocriticism

A provocation?…?the minds of my generation of organizational theorists are haunted by the spectre of scientific discourse, shoehorned into dry genres, bullied by audit regimes that try to wring the passion out of thought. Without gaiety, the science that calls us has no exuberance, it cannot dance. What are the possibilities for writing about organizations that allows the heart's instincts to be followed, the vast possibilities of expression to be explored and enjoyed? I explore this through a form of writing known as fictocriticism – a writing engaged in genre-bending as a literary and theoretical engagement with existence and selfhood. Why import this term into organization studies? Might fictocriticism have some value to ‘us’ who locate ourselves here? I am engaging in a form of romance; a courtship of ideas from elsewhere. What might result from this union is not clear, but it offers hope, excitement and promise.     

Anticipated Ethics and Regulatory Challenges in PCORnet: The National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network

PCORnet, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network, seeks to establish a robust national health data network for patient-centered comparative effectiveness research. This article reports the results of a PCORnet survey designed to identify the ethics and regulatory challenges anticipated in network implementation. A 12-item online survey was developed by leadership of the PCORnet Ethics and Regulatory Task Force; responses were collected from the 29 PCORnet networks. The most pressing ethics issues identified related to informed consent, patient engagement, privacy and confidentiality, and data sharing. High priority regulatory issues included IRB coordination, privacy and confidentiality, informed consent, and data sharing. Over 150 IRBs and five different approaches to managing multisite IRB review were identified within PCORnet. Further empirical and scholarly work, as well as practical and policy guidance, is essential if important initiatives that rely on comparative effectiveness research are to move forward.

Bayesian optimal sequential design for nonparametric regression via inhomogeneous evolutionary MCMC

We develop a novel computational methodology for Bayesian optimal sequential design for nonparametric regression. This computational methodology, that we call inhomogeneous evolutionary Markov chain Monte Carlo, combines ideas of simulated annealing, genetic or evolutionary algorithms, and Markov chain Monte Carlo. Our framework allows optimality criteria with general utility functions and general classes of priors for the underlying regression function. We illustrate the usefulness of our novel methodology with applications to experimental design for nonparametric function estimation using Gaussian process priors and free-knot cubic splines priors.     

How to Compete Against a Behavioral Newsvendor

We investigate newsvendor ordering behavior under competition. We present a laboratory experiment that documents the behavioral ordering regularities in competitive newsvendor environments, and an analytical model extending the standard theory of newsvendor competition by including an optimal best‐response policy for competing with a behaviorally biased newsvendor. We test the effectiveness of this policy using an out‐of‐sample experiment and find that it results in improved market share, service level and profitability.

直觉在哲学中的地位问题,是最近哲学界争论的一个焦点。在哲学分析与论证中,直觉具有十分重要的作用。实验哲学的大量研究发现,直觉具有多样性和差异性。直觉的可靠性因此受到了质疑,直觉的方法论地位因此受到了挑战。“直接论证直觉方法的认知地位”,“否认直觉具有显著的多样性”,“否认直觉多样性的重要性”,“否认直觉的多样性会导致不可靠性”这些策略在不同的程度上捍卫了直觉的方法论地位。正如多变的知觉在认知中具有重要地位一样,直觉的多样性与差异性并不必然动摇直觉在哲学中的地位。     

盘形钻头刮切实验数据分析处理

简要介绍了盘形钻头的结构特点及工作机理,着重对盘形牙轮钻头9种不同结构参数的盘形切削齿与目前镶齿牙轮钻头上使用的瓢形和楔形齿在重庆砂岩上进行了刮切对比实验的实验数据进行了分析处理。求出了刮切实验中测得的不同牙齿在刮切过程中的刮切力的最大值、最小值、平均值和刮切单位体积岩石所需的刮切力的大小,得到了不同结构牙齿在刮切重庆砂岩时的刮切效果,为进一步设计出实用于中硬及软地层并具有较高综合工作性能的盘形钻头提供了实验数据。

试析我国公民政治文化的建构

建构与民主政治相适应的公民政治文化,达到政治理念的一元化,是我国社会主义市场经济发展、民主法制建设以及精神文明建设的客观必然。改变原有的臣民心理,构建与民主政治相适应的公民政治文化是一个艰难的长期的过程,需要社会经济制度、政治制度、民主实践、民众的心理结构等各个层面为之提供条件。
