也谈新时期群众工作的重点和难点

当前,群众工作面临着许多新挑战,出现了许多新问题,这不仅是个理论问题,更是个实践问题。为做好新时期、新特点下的群众工作,不断提高群众工作的有效性,我们必须不断探索群众工作的新方法：要加大对党的理论和重大方针政策的解读力度;要增强理想信念的亲和力和吸引力;要不断提高执政理性的说服力;要提升党员干部践行＂三种力＂的能力。     

Mothers and work–life balance: exploring the contradictions and complexities involved in work–family negotiation

This article presents data from a project exploring women's experiences of work and care. It focuses primarily on work–life balance as a problematic concept. Social and economic transformations across advanced post-industrial economies have resulted in concerns about how individuals manage their lives across the two spheres of work and family and achieve a work–life balance. Governments across the European Union have introduced various measures to address how families effectively combine care with paid work. Research within this area has tended to focus on work–life balance as an objective concept, which implies a static and fixed state fulfilled by particular criteria and measured quantitatively. Qualitative research on women's experiences reveals work–life balance as a fluctuating and intangible process. This article highlights the subjective and variable nature of work–life balance and questions taken-for-granted assumptions, exploring problems of definition and the differential coping strategies which women employ when negotiating the boundaries between work and family.     

The Patient Transit Assistance Scheme: A case for social work advocacy!

Abstract

The Patient Transit Assistance Scheme is one of Queensland Health's initiatives designed to facilitate equity of access for Queensland residents to essential health care services. The purpose of the scheme is to help all Queenslanders, irrespective of where they live, to have access to specialist medical services. It provides direct financial assistance to patients and in some cases their carers, to facilitate access to specialist medical services irrespective of geographic location.

The findings of recent research conducted on social worker involvement with PTAS for patients diagnosed with leukaemia and associated haematological disorders will be used to argue that the problems in relation to the administration of this scheme require serious attention at the level of patient care and health policy.

Parental Work Schedules and Children's Cognitive Trajectories

Previous work has shown an association between mothers' nonstandard work schedules and children's well-being. We built on this research by examining the relationship between parental shift work and children's reading and math trajectories from age 5/6 to 13/14. Using data (N=7,105) from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth and growth curve modeling, we found that children's math and reading trajectories were related to parents' type of nonstandard shifts (i.e., evening, night, or variable). We found that having a mother who worked more years at a night shift was associated with lower reading scores, having a mother work more years at evening or night shifts was associated with reduced math trajectories, and having a father work more years at an evening shift was associated with reduced math scores. Mediation tests suggest that eating meals together, parental knowledge about children's whereabouts, and certain after-school activities might help explain these results.     

Jewish and Muslim Married Women Don't Work

ABSTRACT

This article sets out to locate the place and meaning of work within the lives of migrant wives by examining the experiences of two migrant waves into Britain: Eastern European Jews from Russia, Russia/Poland, and Romania at the end of the nineteenth and early years of the twentieth centuries; and Muslim Bangladeshis during the latter decades of the twentieth and dawn of the twenty-first centuries. Using a cultural and religious framework, it explores the reality of life for women whose traditional role has been perceived solely as that of homemaker. However, research has shown that in the case of both groups, economic activities were carried out within and beyond the home. Going behind the “veil,” it reveals the various means employed by women who sought to sustain the household at times of hardship, even if this involved contravening the wishes of spouses and in-laws. Finally, the article highlights the recent changes that have taken place in the economic lives of Bangladeshi and Pakistani women who are seeking to empower themselves by moving into the economic mainstream.     

Group work in the mental health field: researching outcome

This paper reviews outcome studies from groups facilitated for persons living with serious mental illness. Although the research base is limited (groups posing considerable methodological challenges), available studies show that, in general, group work is as effective as individual work, if not more so. This paper describes findings from studies of short-term, long-term and self-help groups dealing with mood disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and borderline personality disorders over the last 10 years. The concept of ‘time-effective’ group work is discussed as are the potentially harmful effects of group participation. The paper concludes by arguing that group work is an effective and less expensive treatment option that would benefit from further research to establish an evidence base, both for current practice and for the expansion of group work practice in the future.
