Managing competence acquisition and financial performance: An empirical study of how small firms use competence acquisition strategies

Past research has neglected how small firms manage competence acquisition. Based on transaction cost literature, this article identifies competence acquisition management strategies and their implications for performance. We explore this issue using survey data from 842 small, knowledge-intensive firms. The results outline four aspects of competence acquisition management: (1) competence absorbers, (2) social acquirers, (3) market acquirers, and (4) nonacquirers. Furthermore, we hypothesized and found that market acquirers score higher in terms of financial performance than firms following the other strategies. The market acquirer strategy proved particularly effective under conditions of high dynamism.     

Links between Social Understanding and Early Word Learning: Challenges to Current Accounts

If young children approached word learning with little social savvy, certain predictable patterns of error would arise in the way they interpret new words. The absence of such errors provides evidence that social understanding informs word learning even in the infancy period. We outline such evidence, and then scrutinize it with respect to four challenges. 1) Is it necessary to invoke genuine social understanding to explain infants’ word‐learning successes? 2) Do infants treat social clues as criterial in their interpretation of new words? 3) Individuals suffering clear deficits in social understanding sometimes display apparently intact vocabulary acquisition: Must we then conclude that word learning can proceed without the aid of social understanding? 4) Is processing of social clues too effortful to be generally useful for everyday word learning? The first challenge is answered by the available evidence: Infants indeed capitalize on social understanding to interpret new words. Although the remaining challenges have yet to be resolved, we offer speculations that might profitably guide future investigation.

Discrete time, discrete state latent Markov modelling for assessing and predicting household acquisitions of financial products

Summary.  The paper demonstrates application of the latent Markov model for assessing developments by individuals through stages of a process. This approach is applied by using a database on ownership of 12 financial products and various demographic variables. The latent Markov model derives latent classes, representing household product portfolios, and shows the relationship between class membership and household demographics. The analysis provides insight into switching between the latent classes, reflecting developments of individual household product portfolios, and the effects of demographics on such switches. Based on this, we formulate equations to predict future acquisitions of financial products. The model accurately predicts which product a specific household unit acquires next, for most of the products.

输入强化影响二语听力注意的实证研究

注意在二语习得中扮演着重要角色。以注意假设和输入强化为理论基础,本研究采用前测-实验-后测-延时后测的实验方法,以英语虚拟语气为目的语形式,实证研究了输入强化对促进二语听力注意和习得的影响。结果表明：语法提示不能有效促进二语听力注意,输入强化有效地促进了二语听力注意;语法提示和输入强化结合促进了二语听力注意,但与单独输入强化促进注意程度无明显差异。应重视输入强化的形式和内容,抓住学习者兴趣,促进学习者在二语听力习得中的持续注意。     

语言输入假说对高职英语听说交际能力培养的启示

Krashen的语言输入假说是二语习得理论的一个重要组成部分,此假说的四个基本理论对高职英语听说教学带来了很大启示。教师应提高听说教学输入的质与量,并尽量提供学生"可理解性"输入的机会,从而培养学生良好的听说交际能力和职业能力。
