Alternative Factors for Control Chart Construction

Conflicting decision signals resulting from Shewhart Mean and Variability Control Charts produce undesirable consequences. Therefore, we construct “six-sigma” control charts by alternative methods to avoid problems associated with Control Charts yielding different signals. By adjusting methods for control chart construction for dispersion charts, we produce new reference tables. The new tables provide consistent signals and appear similar and familiar to users of historical tables.     

Evaluation of a method for setting confidence intervals on the common mean of two normal populations

Let X₁, , X₂, …, X be distributed N(µ, σ² _x), let Y₁, Y₂, …, Y"_n be distributed N(µ, σ² _y), and let X , X , … X_m, Y₁, Y₂, …, Y_n be mutually independent. In this paper a method for setting confidence intervals on the common mean µ is proposed and evaluated.     

Simulation of the p-generalized Gaussian distribution

In this paper, we introduce the p-generalized polar methods for the simulation of the p-generalized Gaussian distribution. On the basis of geometric measure representations, the well-known Box–Muller method and the Marsaglia–Bray rejecting polar method for the simulation of the Gaussian distribution are generalized to simulate the p-generalized Gaussian distribution, which fits much more flexibly to data than the Gaussian distribution and has already been applied in various fields of modern sciences. To prove the correctness of the p-generalized polar methods, we give stochastic representations, and to demonstrate their adequacy, we perform a comparison of six simulation techniques w.r.t. the goodness of fit and the complexity. The competing methods include adapted general methods and another special method. Furthermore, we prove stochastic representations for all the adapted methods.     

Understanding Canonical Correlation through the General Linear Model and Principal Components

Canonical correlation has been little used and little understood, even by otherwise sophisticated analysts. An alternative approach to canonical correlation, based on a general linear multivariate model, is presented. Properties of principal component analysis are used to help explain the method. Standard computational methods for full rank canonical correlation, techniques for canonical correlation on component scores, and canonical correlation with less than full rank are discussed. They are seen to be essentially equivalent when the model equation for canonical correlation on component scores is presented. The two approaches to less than full rank situations are equivalent in some senses, but quite different in usefulness, depending on the application. An example dataset is analyzed in detail to help demonstrate the conclusions.     

Federated searching and usability testing: Building the perfect beast

With the ubiquity of federated search tools as viable solutions for students and researchers to search across external sources and internal repositories, users have become more sophisticated in their application of this technology. With the goal of optimizing the user experience of its newly introduced federated search offering, Endeavor Information Systems employed usability testing to gain insights into the critical requirements of librarians and information professionals for this solution. The results of this analysis, conducted in concert with market research and customer focus groups, and their relevance to Endeavor's federated search technology are the focus of this article.     

Number of Replications Required in Control Chart Monte Carlo Simulation Studies

Monte Carlo simulations have been used extensively in studying the performance of control charts. Researchers have used various numbers of replications in their studies, but almost none of them provided justifications for the number of replications used. Currently, there are no empirically based recommendations regarding the required number of replications to ensure accurate results. This research examined six recently published studies to develop recommendations for the minimum number of replications necessary to reproduce the reported results within a specified degree of accuracy. The results of this study indicated that using 10,000 replications was unnecessarily large and a smaller number of replications could be used to reproduce the target ARLs within the 2% error bands satisfying the modified Mundfrom's criteria. In many cases, only 5,000 replications or fewer were required. In general, the number of replications required to reproduce the target ARL decreased as the shift size increased. In addition, the results of this study provide general recommendations for the required number of replications to use in future SPC simulation studies.     

Online Control Charts for Process Averages Based on Repeated Median Filters

Two types of estimates of process level, namely repeated median estimates (Siegel, 1982 Siegel , A. F. ( 1982 ). Robust regression using repeated medians . Biometrika 69 : 242 – 244 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]) and full online estimates (Gather et al., 2006 Gather , U. , Schettlinger , K. , Fried , R. ( 2006 ). Online signal extraction by robust linear regression . Computational Statistics 21 : 33 – 51 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]) based on repeated median filters, are used to develop control charts. The distributional properties of the estimates are studied using simulation and these are found to closely follow normal distribution. The repeated median being robust against outliers with asymptotically 50% breakdown value and having small standard deviation is found to be useful as a basis for monitoring process averages. The control charts using repeated median estimates have been recommended for general use.
