A Review of Two Text-Mining Packages

The purpose of this article is to review two text mining packages, namely, WordStat and SAS TextMiner. WordStat is developed by Provalis Research. SAS TextMiner is a product of SAS. We review the features offered by each package on each of the following key steps in analyzing unstructured data: (1) data preparation, including importing and cleaning; (2) performing association analysis; and (3) presenting the findings, including illustrative quotes and graphs. We also evaluate each package on its ability to help researchers extract major themes from a dataset. Both packages offer a variety of features that effectively help researchers run associations and present results. However, in extracting themes from unstructured data, both packages were only marginally helpful. The researcher still needs to read the data and make all the difficult decisions. This finding stems from the fact that the software can search only for specific terms in documents or categorize documents based on common terms. Respondents, however, may use the same term or combination of terms to mean different things. This implies that a text mining approach, which is based on analysis units other than terms, may be more powerful in extracting themes, an idea we touch upon in the conclusion section.

Andrews plots for multivariate data: some new suggestions and applications

Andrews plots (Biometrics 28 (1972) 125-136), as a tool to graphically interpret multivariate data, have recently gained considerable recognition. In this article, we first review the previous literature and then suggest a modification to the traditional Andrews plots. Finally, we illustrate a few new applications of these plots in robust design studies and in correspondence analysis, using real data.     

通信反馈法对大学生二语写作效果的实验研究

研究采用定量分析法考查了非英语专业一年级152名大学生的作文测试成绩、性格因素对通信反馈机制功效的影响和学生对通信反馈教学的态度。结果发现基于内容的通信反馈教学比传统批改反馈方式对学生英语写作能力的提高有更积极的促进作用,尤其是在丰富写作内容、增强连贯方面效果较显著。研究能启发我们更好地理解写作的过程、认识和把握写作的本质、帮助提高二语写作教学效果。

在跨文化交际活动中,个体所具有的语境意识差异持续地影响着客体范畴概念的界定,尤其在语言形式被当作语言内容的重要部分考虑时.文体产生于语境.语境的三要素语场、语旨和语式,决定了语言形式的选择.本文以语境的三要素为依据,分析了外贸信函在篇章结构、词汇、句法三个方面的文体特征.     

先秦名学思想中的逻辑内蕴

先秦逻辑思想在我国逻辑思想发展史上的地位是很特殊的。这直接关系到这样一个问题:中国古代有没有逻辑?如果有,又是属于什么性质的逻辑?作者主要分析先秦逻辑中的正名思想或正名逻辑的那个部分,试图指出,先秦名学不仅有其独特的逻辑内蕴,而且这种内蕴主要是属于形式关系方面的。     

网络课程在成人高等教育函授教学中的应用与实践

针对传统函授面授教学时间和空间上受限的缺陷,介绍了网络课程的优点、网络课程的结构以及网络课程的应用实践体会,指出了网络课程建设的几个误区。实践证明网络课程引入到函授教学实践活动中,成为函授教学的重要教学辅助手段,有效地缩短教师和函授学员之间的距离,充实了课程教学资源,方便师生间的沟通,激发了学生的学习兴趣,有益于提高函授教学质量。     

An analysis of International Bulfer Stocks for cocoa and copper through dynamic optimization

Optimal control theory is used to analyze buffer stock price stabilisation. Linear econometric models of the world cocoa and copper markets are estimated over the period 1956-75 and the simulated to determine the “systematic” price for each commodity—the price when stochastic sources of market variation are suppressed. Stabilization at this price reduces the instability of producer revenue and also increases total revenue for both commodities. However, the buffer stocks are expensive. Net costs over the period 1966-76 are estimated at $1.7 billion for cocoa and $0.9 billion for copper.

采用“意义相符,功能相似”的社会符号学翻译标准,以双关、典故和重复三种修辞的翻译为例,探讨了《葬花吟》霍译本中言内意义及相应功能的再现。分析表明,英汉两种语言符号的差异在某种程度上导致了言内意义及相应功能在翻译过程中的流失。因此,在诗歌翻译的过程中,要注重言内意义的转换,尤其是修辞的再现。
