A New Lens on High School Dropout: Use of Correspondence Analysis and the Statewide Longitudinal Data System

The combination of log-linear models and correspondence analysis have long been used to decompose contingency tables and aid in their interpretation. Until now, this approach has not been applied to the education Statewide Longitudinal Data System (SLDS), which contains administrative school data at the student level. While some research has been conducted using the SLDS, its primary use is for state education administrative reporting. This article uses the combination of log-linear models and correspondence analysis to gain insight into high school dropouts in two discrete regions in Kentucky, Appalachia and non-Appalachia, defined by the American Community Survey. The individual student records from the SLDS were categorized into one of the two regions and a log-linear model was used to identify the interactions between the demographic characteristics and the dropout categories, push-out and pull-out. Correspondence analysis was then used to visualize the interactions with the expanded push-out categories, boredom, course selection, expulsion, failing grade, teacher conflict, and pull-out categories, employment, family problems, illness, marriage, and pregnancy to provide insights into the regional differences. In this article, we demonstrate that correspondence analysis can extend the insights gained from SDLS data and provide new perspectives on dropouts. Change-point estimation in a multinomial sequence and homogeneity of literary style

To help settle the debate around the authorship of Tirant lo Blanc, all the words in each chapter of that book are categorized according to their length and the appearance of various words is counted. The graphical exploration of the sequences of multinomial observations obtained reveals a clear single sudden change point that is consistently estimated to be between chapters 371 and 382 and might indicate a switch of author. Correspondence analysis indicates that at the end of the book the words tend to be longer and the frequency of various words changes significantly. By doing a cluster analysis of the multinomial observations, the evidence in favor of the existence of that stylistic boundary is strengthened, because the two clusters obtained match very closely the before and after change-point groups; only a few chapters at the end of the book appear to be misclassified by the change point.

When tourists are your “friends”: Exploring the brand personality of Mexico and Brazil on Facebook

Adopting Aaker's (1997) framework, this study explored how popular tourist destinations, Mexico and Brazil, communicate their brand personality through Facebook, and which personality traits their Facebook “friends” associate with them. Results of computer-aided content analysis indicated that both countries’ tourism promotion messages emphasize distinct brand personality traits. However, Mexico's public relations efforts were more successful than Brazil's in transferring projected brand personality to its Facebook “friends”.     

市场需求分析下高职商务英语专业课程优化的探索——以外贸函电课程为例

根究高职商务英语教育突出＂应用型＂人才培养的特点,商务英语课程建设应符合市场的客观需求。基于需求分析理论,通过对当地企业、在职人员和学生的需求调查和分析,以外贸函电课程为例,从教学内容、教学方法、实训模块和考核方式四个方面提出课程优化的具体建议。     

经学札记三则

一,《周易》与周礼相通,可以互证。但是解说《周易》反映的古礼必须谨慎。二,《春秋》可以当礼书看,其中贯穿了孔仲尼维护周礼的原则精神。三,昭公元年《左传》记穆叔赋《鹊巢》而赵孟“不堪”,古今注家大多不知其所以然。解说春秋时期赋《诗》明志若要求其准确,就必须抓住切合当时情境与《诗》原文的契合点。
