Theories as modern myths: Giving up the pursuit of good theory to focus on good theorizing

Mills discusses the notion of myth and links it to a discussion of theory. While he does not consider myth and theory to be synonymous, I attempt to close the gap between these two notions even further. This argument is accomplished by discussing theorists that have theorized about theory and aligning their claims with Mills’ claims about myth. I propose that Mills cannot rely on coherence to substantiate good myth/theory and, instead, suggest the consideration of what constitutes good quality theorizing. Good theorizing involves deep understanding of different theories/myths and comparing them to generate innovation.     

Political constructions of a cross-community identity in a divided society: how politicians articulate Northern Irishness

ABSTRACT

A shared identity has been shown to reduce prejudice between conflicting social groups. One such common national category is the ‘Northern Irish’ identity which can be inclusive of both Catholics and Protestants. This study analyses the plenary sessions of the Northern Ireland Assembly to show how the national category ‘Northern Irish’ is framed by politicians. Content analysis shows that it is used more often by centrist parties who tend to frame it positively and as part of their political viewpoint. There is also evidence of the instrumental use of this identity by unionists in line with the ingroup projection model.

刘智作为明末清初的著名汉文译著家,他的翻译、介绍和著述充满了时代的创新性、开创性.刘智译著中哲学思想的丰富来源于他对伊斯兰哲学和思想的深刻学习和理解,更得益于他对中国传统哲学的悉心了解和系统掌握.其中,刘智对伊斯兰教哲学史上著名的哲学家、思想家和诗人阿布德·热哈曼·贾米(Abd al-Rahman Jami,伊历817-898年,1414-1492)的<勒瓦一合>(Lawa'ih)的译介,以<真境昭微>而著名,并反映了刘智译介过程中的创造性特征.<真境昭微>既忠实于原著,又以中国穆斯林的聪明才智超越了原文的文本,进行了汉语语境中的创造性表述和中国哲学范畴的恰当转化,从而以汉语的话语更直观地体现了伊斯兰哲学,特别是伊斯兰苏非哲学思想中"存在统一论"思想,以及苏非追求和实践自我超越和心灵升华的理想境界.在中国伊斯兰哲学、伊斯兰思想史上具有重要的理论价值和现实意义,也更好地体现了伊斯兰哲学和中国哲学的交流和融通,是人类智慧和思想间相互学习、理解、交流和对话的一幅历史风景画.

闽南民间故事中的怪诞形象与闽南独特的“惧鬼”心理密切相关，是闽南文化心理中的惧鬼因素和魔鬼意象。这种创造不仅可以看出闽南民众对给他们的生存和生活造成不安全不稳定因素的畏惧、警惕和否定，同时也透露出闽南民众对生活危机的发泄和补偿心理以及对美好稳定的生活理想和社会秩序的渴望和追求，形象地传达出了闽南文化的特殊内涵和价值取向。     

沉樱小说中女性婚恋心理的观察与体验

20世纪30年代初的女作家沉樱从自身的婚恋生活经验出发，对五四时期现代家庭生活作出新的体察和揭示，客观地描摹出一些新女性在满怀希望走进婚恋生活后内心所感受的空寂与焦虑，同时也大胆地表现出这些女性对于自我欲望的发现与表述。     

Vulnerable young people and substance misuse: expanding on the risk and protection‐focused approach using social psychology

This paper critically reviews recent research exploring risk and protective factors for the development of problematic substance use in populations of young people. Specific populations of young people who are most vulnerable to developing problematic patterns of use are identified, and alterations to methods of data collection which would improve the ability of local authorities to monitor these populations and more efficiently target them for early preventative interventions are highlighted. It is argued that social‐psychological research techniques and approaches should be used to complement a risk and protection‐focused approach in order to improve the design and evaluation of interventions, and provide decision‐aids for practitioners when assessing the needs of vulnerable young people. Examples are provided to demonstrate the utility of social psychology in this regard, and the paper concludes with specific recommendations for future research and services.
