Personal influence and pre-industrial United States: An early relationship model that needs resurgence in U.S. public relations

The personal influence model of public relations, using one's influence to seek favor with government and other power bases, is seen as most applicable in Asia but also is found elsewhere in the world. Only a few writings have explicitly broached the possibility that the personal influence model is practiced in the United States. Muzi Falconi (2010) argued that U.S. public relations emphasizes persuasion, espoused by Bernays and brought to fruition through one-way messaging. While it is easy to see persuasion as dominating U.S. practice, such observation ignores the prevalence of personal influence through at least 150 years of U.S. society. As early settlers built agrarian communities, interpersonal communication fostered community pride and solidarity. During World War II, Katz and Lazarsfeld identified personal influence as a major element in U.S. communication, overriding the mass media in importance. Even today much public relations activity in the U.S. consists of organizations seeking favor from the power elites. However, with the focus on message control, scholars have overlooked the efforts and effects of personal influence. The purpose of this paper is to identify early evidences of the personal influence model in the U.S. Today, the increasing power of social media and virtual stakeholders renders the persuasion model as somewhat specious. It is time to reexamine the concept of personal influence and the greater promise it holds for returning to what public relations was and should be in the first place—a function for maintaining relationships.     

Compulsory Income Management: A Critical Examination of the Emergence of Conditional Welfare in Australia

Abstract

The introduction of compulsory income management by the then Coalition Government in 2007 signalled the increasing policy influence of individualistic as opposed to structural explanations of social disadvantage. Using key policy and evaluation literature, this article critically examines the principal arguments for and against compulsory income management. Specific questions are raised about the top-down and coercive nature of compulsory income management, the lack of supporting empirical evidence, and its apparent discrimination against Australians who are Indigenous or reliant on income security payments, or both. Some conclusions are drawn about the potential for more effective policy solutions that would involve a genuine partnership with disadvantaged communities.

Developing emotional intelligence through workplace learning: Findings from a case study in healthcare

This study of UK and US lone parents with sole care-giving responsibility for dependants (children, ageing parents, grandparents, etc.) focused on the influence, if any, this responsibility has on her/his ability to give 'total commitment' to their work/career. One hundred and thirty-four lone parents participated in the survey. Gender distribution was 64 per cent female, 36 per cent male. Country of residence was 25 per cent UK, 75 per cent US. Females report greater past than present hindrance to their careers (48 per cent past, 33 per cent present). Similarly situated males report career hindrance as 18 per cent past, 21 per cent present. Lone parents in the UK appear to be more negatively impacted upon in their job careers by their care-giving responsibility than their counterparts in the US and would also appear to be more concerned about their economic and emotional future. This survey confirms that care-giving responsibilities can limit the realization of employment potential for either female or male. Care-giving responsibilities, rather than gender or race, may be the glass ceiling of the new millennium.

由于刑事立法对伪造货币罪是采用简单罪状的表达方式 ,因而刑法理论中对其构成要件的表述可谓仁者见仁 ,智者见智。这种局面显然不利于司法实践中准确认定和打击伪造货币犯罪。为了统一定罪标准 ,本文从学理的角度对伪造货币罪的直接客体、客观要件、主观要件以及伪造并持有、使用货币的定性这四个存在争议的疑难问题作探讨 ,阐述自己浅见 ,以期对刑事立法与刑事司法认定有所帮助     

邻里关系调查分析——以同煤集团“恒安新区、文瀛湖新区”为例

本调查报告主要是在同煤集团两区建设的背景下,探讨以矿山为基础的不同地缘群体迁移到一起后,两区邻里关系的问题。结果表明:两区绝大部分居民缺乏对邻居的了解,基本处在识而不熟的阶段;邻里矛盾并不激化但确实存在,主要体现在施工问题上;对于已出现的矛盾,绝大部分居民选择自行解决;虽然存在困难,但两区居民对于发展邻里关系持积极的态度。     

A two-stage design for multivariate estimation of proportions

ABSTRACT

In this article, the problem of estimation of the several proportions of two inter-dependent sensitive characteristics prevailing in a given population is considered. A new two-stage randomized response model has been proposed by extending Lee et al.’s (2013 Lee, C., Sedory, S., Singh, S (2013). Estimation at least seven measures of qualitative variables from a single sample using randomized response technique. Stat. Probab. Lett. 83(1):399–409.[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]) model. The expressions for biases, variances, and mean square errors of different estimators have been provided. The relative efficiency comparisons of the proposed estimators has been made, numerically by considering the different practicable choices of the design parameters. It was observed that the proposed extended version performs efficiently than simple and crossed models of Lee et al. (2013 Lee, C., Sedory, S., Singh, S (2013).
