Teachers in Cyprus are being called upon for the first time to teach within culturally diverse educational settings. Given the substantial role, teachers play in the implementation of intercultural education, this paper explores the intercultural strategies and procedures adopted by primary school teachers in Cyprus. Interviews were carried out with 30 teachers, from four different schools. Findings show that participants held conflicting perceptions of intercultural education, while they lacked sufficient awareness of their immigrant students’ cultural backgrounds. Participants adopted individualised and collaborative strategies, classroom discussions on intercultural issues and attempted to raise immigrant students’ self-esteem in order to promote intercultural education. However, their own lack of intercultural preparation, along with lack of language proficiency of immigrant students, the inadequacy of the Cypriot national curriculum and time constraints, worked against efforts to promote greater inclusion.

This paper is concerned with the problem of allocating a fixed number of trials between two independent binomial populations with unknown success probabilities θ1 and θ2, in order to estimate θ1 - θ2 with squared error loss. Introducing independent beta priors on θ1 and θ2, a heuristic allocation procedure is introduced and compared both with the optimal and with the best fixed allocation procedure. Numerical and asymptotic results of these comparisons are given and seem to indicate that there are situations when the best fixed allocation procedure performs almost as well as the optimal procedure. 相似文献
China’s legal reforms have promoted the use of law and legal system to solve disputes. Based on data from a nationwide sample, this study examined among people who have recently encountered grievance/dispute, what is the relationship between their intention to use the court and their actual use of the court to solve the grievance/dispute, and what are the correlates that affect their intentions and actions of using legal versus other modes of remedies. The results highlight the primacy of administrative petitioning and non-governmental remedies in handing disputes. There is only a low degree of conjunction between people’s reported willingness to use the law and their actual use of the law in addressing grievance/dispute. Education and urbanization play a significant role in legal mobilization. Further, type of grievance/dispute is among the most significant predictors for both intended and actual appeals to the court. Implications for future research are provided. 相似文献
