Dynamic capabilities and high-tech entrepreneurial ventures’ performance in the aftermath of an environmental jolt

This paper contributes to studies on dynamic capabilities (DCs) by showing that a neglected environmental contingency – i.e. the occurrence of a jolt – shapes the DCs–performance relationship. We focus on high-tech entrepreneurial ventures because these are the firms that jolts affect most; in so doing, we also advance the understanding of DCs in the entrepreneurship field. We argue that, in the aftermath of an environmental jolt, the high-tech entrepreneurial ventures that use internationalization and new product development capabilities to modify their resource configuration and regain environmental fit enjoy better performance. Econometric estimates on a sample of 340 Italian high-tech entrepreneurial ventures confronting the consequences of the global economic crisis that began in 2008 confirm that separately using these two DCs has a positive performance effect. This effect is stronger for relatively smaller ventures. Interestingly, despite synergies should arise from the combined use of the two DCs, we do not detect any superadditive effects.     

Does state ownership really matter? The dynamic alignment of China's resource environment and firm internationalization strategies

Recent research suggests that unequal access to home country institutional resources affects firm internationalization strategies. We add to this debate, based on an analysis of state-owned (SOEs) and non-state-owned (NSOEs) Chinese mining firms, by developing a more dynamic and multi-layered understanding of this interplay. We find that home institutional support can be ownership-based or performance-based, whereby the former benefits SOEs and the latter favors high-performing NSOEs. Combined, these support structures serve as institutional control mechanisms in promoting competition, performance and loyalty to national policies. In addition, they establish a permanent link between firm- and home country-specific assets and incentivize firms to develop dynamic resource access capabilities at home and abroad. Our findings inform our understanding of the firms-institutions nexus and Chinese foreign direct investment dynamics, especially in industries of strategic importance to the state.

随着中国的经济飞速发展,中医药文化逐渐也获得了国际承认,中药走出国门势在必行。贵州拥有丰富的药用资源,药材GAP种植也在全省各地广泛展开。本文对黔药用资源及中药品种参与国际竞争和合作进行综合分析,认为由政府推动、企业为主、院校参与、国际市场化运作,集成研发、技术、人才等要素资源,合力突破国际化过程中的制约瓶颈。     

Firm internationalization and performance: Evidence for designing policies

The debate on the relationship between internationalization and performance is still open and is a hot topic for policymakers, but they ignore the impacts for most of the firms supported. The paper is based on a large database of seven years that considers quantitative-qualitative and control variables. To reduce industry and country heterogeneity we focused on the Italian automotive supply chain. We tested 5 modes of internationalization on firms’ profitability so to support the design of policies. Our results are partially in contrast with literature; therefore we identify specific environments where policies, namely for exporting, could be more effective.     

货币国际化对国内宏观经济的影响

 本文利用新开放经济宏观经济学方法,构建了货币国际化对宏观经济影响的理论模型,从理论上分析了货币国际化对宏观经济短期和长期的影响。理论研究表明,货币国际化具有以下影响：（1）无论在短期还是长期,都将促使本国货币升值,但汇率未出现超调现象;（2）短期内刺激本国消费,长期内抑制本国消费;（3）短期内产出减少,长期内产出增加;（4）短期内改善贸易条件,长期内使贸易条件恶化;（5）无论短期还是长期,都将改善本国居民福利水平。在此基础上,基于结构VAR模型,利用美元经验数据实证分析了美元国际化对美国宏观经济的影响,实证结果表明：经验分析与理论研究结果高度一致。上述研究结论为人民币国际化提供了若干启示。     

上海吸引国际组织（机构）入驻研究

有没有重要的国际组织入驻一直是衡量一个城市乃至整个国家的国际影响力和竞争力的重要指标。上海是中国最大的经济中心城市,也是亚洲增长最快的商业和金融中心之一。中国上海世博会期间,共有49个国际组织参展,其中有7个国际组织成为世博会论坛的协办方。这是上海与世界主要国际组织间最大规模的一次互动。吸引国际组织入驻是一个长期的系统工程,上海要像申博、筹博和办博一样,充分发挥集中力量办大事的制度优势,争取在5～10年内形成由若干著名国际组织为中心、有上海特色的国际组织园区。     

The Role of Social Work Education in Advancing Social Development in the English-speaking Caribbean

This article presents a discussion of the role of professional social work education in advancing social development in the countries of the English-speaking Caribbean. It addresses issues around the development of the profession in the region, student enrolment, curriculum expansion and programme delivery by the institutions which offer social work education. The events which contributed to the emergence of social work education in the region during the fourth decade of the twentieth century and social work education's continued contribution to regional development are discussed. The prospective use of the new Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development to advance the profession in the region in the twenty-first century is noted. The article concludes by highlighting the many challenges that currently impact social work education in the Caribbean and the fact that the development of social work education in the region is inextricably linked to the region's social development needs. Social work education as delivered through the University of the West Indies is used as the case in point for discussion.
