An empirical investigation of campus demographics and reported rapes

Objective: Rape on college campuses continues to be a pervasive public health issue with approximately 11% of women experiencing rape while in college. As such, it is important to examine factors unique to college campuses that influence the occurrences of rape. Methods: Using data from 1,423 four-year universities (public and private with at least 1,000 students) from the Office of Education and the Clery Act (2014), we examined institutional risk factors, such as tuition, liquor violations, Greek-life, athletic programs, institution type (public vs. private), and geographical location. Results: Public institutions with higher tuition, more liquor violations, and greater numbers of fraternity men and athletes were more likely to report rape on their campuses. Conclusions: Findings suggest that there are university-level characteristics which may increase certain campuses propensity toward violence against women.     

Cure rate model with bivariate interval censored data

A mixture model is proposed to analyze a bivariate interval censored data with cure rates. There exist two types of association related with bivariate failure times and bivariate cure rates, respectively. A correlation coefficient is adopted for the association of bivariate cure rates and a copula function is applied for bivariate survival times. The conditional expectation of unknown quantities attributable to interval censored data and cure rates are calculated in the E-step in ES (Expectation-Solving algorithm) and the marginal estimates and the association measures are estimated in the S-step through a two-stage procedure. A simulation study is performed to evaluate the suggested method and a real data from HIV patients is analyzed as a real data example.

本文应用数据挖掘中的关联规则算法,对我国股票市场中板块指数的关系进行实证分析。通过采用关联规则的Apriori算法技术,可以从大量数据中挖掘出我国股票市场的板块指数之间的强关联规则,并对其进行可视化描述与评价。文中所得的关联规则可以帮助市场参与者发现股票板块轮动的规则模式,并在此基础上规避证券市场风险。

从周作人不同时期主编的三种刊物探寻周作人歌谣研究的活动脉络,认为《绍兴县教育会月刊》时期是仅限于个人的兴趣;《歌谣》时期则是五四时期最有意义与影响的民俗学研究之一;而《语丝》时期常与其所特别关注的文明与社会批评结合在一起,产生了很大影响。     

Nonlinear measures of association with kernel canonical correlation analysis and applications

Measures of association between two sets of random variables have long been of interest to statisticians. The classical canonical correlation analysis (LCCA) can characterize, but also is limited to, linear association. This article introduces a nonlinear and nonparametric kernel method for association study and proposes a new independence test for two sets of variables. This nonlinear kernel canonical correlation analysis (KCCA) can also be applied to the nonlinear discriminant analysis. Implementation issues are discussed. We place the implementation of KCCA in the framework of classical LCCA via a sequence of independent systems in the kernel associated Hilbert spaces. Such a placement provides an easy way to carry out the KCCA. Numerical experiments and comparison with other nonparametric methods are presented.     

IPRA Code of Athens—The first international code of public relations ethics: Its development and implementation since 1965

In 1965, the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) adopted the International Code of Ethics, which became known as the Code of Athens (IPRA, 2001). The Code was authored by Lucien Matrat, a French public relations pioneer, and reflected a hopeful, post-World War 2 ethical framework with its strong linkage to the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 (IPRA, 1994). A code of ethics was an early strategic imperative of IPRA, established 10 years before, and was coupled with a Code of Conduct, known as the Code of Venice of 1961 (0065 and 0070). Both codes were adopted by many national public relations associations and widely promoted.     

Watson Kirkconnell on “The place of Slavic studies in Canada”: a 1957 speech to the Canadian Association of Slavists

This article introduces and reprints a speech by Watson Kirkconnell to the Canadian Association of Slavists in 1957. Watson Kirkconnell (1895—1977) was an influential Canadian scholar, university administrator, Baptist activist, and prodigious translator of verse. The introduction discusses his significant role in the development of Slavic and East European studies in Canada, as founder of the Humanities Research Council of Canada, and as an early promoter of multiculturalism in Canada. In his speech, Kirkconnell discussed his personal encounter with Slavic studies and the early development of the field in Canada, his role in the pre-history of the Canadian Association of Slavists, and the importance he accorded to fostering critical knowledge of the Slavic and East European societies and cultures in Canada. Slavic studies, he argued, were necessary both intellectually and politically: the Slavic and East European literatures constituted “major stones in the arch of modern civilization”; moreover, in the atmosphere of the Cold War, knowledge of the languages and societies of Soviet-dominated Central and Eastern Europe would play a fundamental role in the fight against communism.     

中国古代的社、结社与文人结社

目前学界关于中国古代文人结社的研究主要是实证性的和文化学的,学理性研究尚未引起足够重视。结社的学理性研究是对结社的本体进行研究,诸如什么是结社,结社与群体、集团、政党等概念的区别与联系是什么,结社的形态和类型有哪些,中国古代的结社是由哪些要素构成的,什么样的结社可以称为文人结社等等。对这些根本性问题的解答是研究工作取得更大成效的前提和基础,在某种意义上它比上述两类研究更为重要。
