Jack Michael,Behavior Analyst

Jack Michael was the quintessential behavior analyst. Despite his reputation as a theoretician and expert in verbal behavior and on Skinner’s book Verbal Behavior, Jack was actually an applied behavior analyst in the literal sense before anyone had coined the term. Prior to becoming one of Jack’s doctoral students at Western Michigan University, I was a behavior-analytic neophyte. After I graduated and began my own teaching (modeled after Jack’s behavior-analytic method of teaching) and thinking and writing about behavior analysis, I found myself talking and thinking like Jack. He had a similar behavior changing effect not only on many of his other students, but also on others who had the good fortune to know him.     

“OK guys,thank you for coming today”: Indexicality,utterance events,and verbal rituals in political speeches in Sheikh Jarrah

This ethnography looks at the indexical function of several brief utterances, routinely employed by a Palestinian speechmaker, in the Sheikh Jarrah protest in East Jerusalem. Following Silverstein's contributions to the indexically based theory of (meta)pragmatics, “creative” and nonreferential utterances are examined at the utterance event level, in relation to the speech event level, and more generally to verbal rituals. The political speeches I study have been delivered weekly, in Hebrew, by a Sheikh Jarrah resident and activist, for over a decade. The ethnographic analysis depicts how the utterances create a physical and symbolic (rhetorical) space for the performance of the speeches, routinize and ritualize their recurrence, and secure their endurance in a hostile environment. This is accomplished by spatially disassembling and reassembling the protesters, modifying the participation structure, and establishing a host–guest relationship. The speaker is repositioned as a resident, activist, and political rhetor-in-the-becoming, and the protestors are repositioned as his audience.

《死者》中迈克尔的角色

《死者》是詹姆斯·乔伊斯短篇小说集《都柏林人》中的最后一篇.作者通过生者的回忆描写了一系列的死者形象,最后以加布里埃尔妻子年轻时的情人迈克尔作为促成主人公顿悟的关键.文章以迈克尔为中心,解读这一角色对于主人公精神顿悟所起到的作用.     

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND THE NATURE OF SCIENCE

The debate about the patenting of research is perhaps the most passionate now taking place about science and scientific culture. It is widely maintained that the expansion of patenting since about 1980 betrays a scientific tradition to which norms of universalism and common ownership of knowledge were central. This paper goes back to mid-twentieth century debates about science and intellectual property (IP) to argue that many of the norms we take as so central to science were themselves first articulated to critique patenting practices. In particular, it looks at how an economist (Arnold Plant), a scientist/philosopher (Michael Polanyi), and an information theorist (Norbert Wiener) responded to such practices. It especially focuses on the role of intellectual-property concerns in the making of Polanyi's philosophy of science, which it excavates through a reading of his unpublished papers. This reveals that the modern field of ‘science studies’ is indebted for some of its key concepts to an earlier generation of patent wars – an inheritance that exemplifies some of the strange ways in which the sociopolitical meanings of ideas can change from generation to generation. The point is not that present-day critics of scientific patenting are wrong, but that the very terms of the debate are more deeply-seated in the development of scientific culture than any of us has realized.

波兰尼科研诚信建设思想探析

科学共同体的成员是科研诚信建设的主体。波兰尼早在20世纪40年代就提出了“科学共同体”思想，认为科学共同体存在着两种矛盾关系：其一，科学权威和普通科研工作者的协作与冲突关系；英二．科学传统与科学创新的矛盾关系。波兰尼通过对“科学共同体”自治管理和社会管理两种方案的设定，来达到规范科研人员的行为，从而实现维护科学健康发展的目的。     

Referral to treatment: improving client-treatment match through process analysis.

This paper presents an expedient procedure for assessing referral counselor knowledge of the effectiveness of various treatment programs for different client types. Among the advantages of this technique are timely results, ease of application, and usefulness for process and formative evaluation. An empirical example using data from a drug abuse referral program is included to demonstrate one application of the technique. The discussion includes additional examples where the technique would have potential utility.
