Valley Creek watershed, located in southeastern Pennsylvania, is a small, fourth-order stream that empties into the Schuylkill River at Valley Forge National Historic Park, thirty-five kilometers northwest of Philadelphia. The 64 km2 watershed has been under extreme urbanization pressure over the past 30 years, resulting in rapidly increasing impervious surface cover and decreasing open space. The purpose of this study was to document some of the effects of urbanization on fish assemblages by quantifying the fish communities at fifteen sites throughout the watershed. Long-term effects of continued urbanization were identified, as data from the present study were compared to similar work completed nearly ten years earlier. There has been a shift in species composition from intolerant, coldwater species to more tolerant, eurythermal species. Currently, Valley Creek is supporting a naturally reproducing population of brown trout, but there has been a marked decline in relative abundance and range since 1993. Increased stream temperature from urban run-off is one of the primary issues in Valley Creek. Species composition was unique at each of the 15 stations owing to the effect of local land use in each station’;s drainage area. Fish assemblages revealed a patchy, non-continuous pattern of fish distribution.  相似文献

We investigate the properties of Baker's (2008) bivariate distributions with fixed marginals and their multivariate extensions. The properties include the weak convergence to the Fréchet–Hoeffding upper bound, the product-moment convergence, as well as the dependence structures TP2 (totally positive of order 2), or MTP2 (multivariate TP2). In proving the weak convergence, a generalized local limit theorem for binomial distribution is provided.  相似文献

Markov chain Monte Carlo methods explicitly defined on the manifold of probability distributions have recently been established. These methods are constructed from diffusions across the manifold and the solution of the equations describing geodesic flows in the Hamilton–Jacobi representation. This paper takes the differential geometric basis of Markov chain Monte Carlo further by considering methods to simulate from probability distributions that themselves are defined on a manifold, with common examples being classes of distributions describing directional statistics. Proposal mechanisms are developed based on the geodesic flows over the manifolds of support for the distributions, and illustrative examples are provided for the hypersphere and Stiefel manifold of orthonormal matrices.  相似文献

We study crossover designs for the comparisons of several test treatments versus a control treatment and partially generalize the results of Hedayat and Yang (2005) to the situation in which subject effects are assumed to be random. More specifically, we establish lower bounds for the trace of the inverse of the information matrix for the test treatments versus control comparisons under a random subject effects model and show that most of the small size (3-, 4- and 5-period) designs introduced by Hedayat and Yang (2005) are highly efficient in the class of designs in which the control treatment appears equally often in all periods and no treatment is immediately preceded by itself.  相似文献

Two different approaches to obtaining finite-sample corrections to score tests are the analytical and the computational approaches. The former is based either on a Bartletttype correction to the test statistic or on the inversion of an Edgeworth expansion to its null distribution. The latter, on the other hand, is usually based on a bootstrapping resampling scheme. This paper provides a numerical comparison of the size and power properties of these two approaches both under correct model specification and under model misspecification.  相似文献

Accumulation of deicing salts in soils in an urban environment   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3  
Examining rates of deicing salt accumulation and leaching in urban soils is important for understanding the distribution and movement of salt in the environment. We examined autumn concentrations of deicing salts in soils in a moderately dense urban landscape in eastern New York State. The study area contrasted to the isolated, rural highways examined in previous studies. While NaCl was the most abundantly applied salt, Mg2+ (apparently from MgCl2, a secondary deicing salt) was the most abundant salt cation in soils. Moderate Na+ levels, and equivalent concentrations at depth and in surface samples, indicate that leaching of Na+ is rapid in this system. Leaching may ameliorate toxicity for land plants but accelerate inputs to aquatic systems. In contrast to rural highway studies, where salt levels declined rapidly with distance to pavement, Na+ remained elevated at the maximum distance measured. Airborne salt dispersal and dense networks of pavement likely contribute to widespread elevated salt levels. This semi-urban setting had salt levels high enough to be toxic to terrestrial plants and soil protozoa. Even moderate levels of development can have dramatic effects on salt inputs into soils and aquatic systems.
