Agriculture,communities, and new social movements: East European ruralities in the process of restructuring

This paper examines the usefulness of the new social movements (NSMs) paradigm in the changing context of East European post-communist societies and their agricultural systems and rural communities. Starting with statements formulated in Western sociology in the context of Western democratic societies about NSMs as a protest against modernity, the paper analyses the role of such movements in the still modernizing Eastern European reality. The first part of the paper briefly examines some basic elements of the NSMs paradigm in European and American social science. The goal of this section is not only to identify the basic characteristics of NSMs, but also to identify the typical frames used by them. The second part of the paper focuses on the presence of NSMs in the communist era. Drawing on the idea of NSMs as indicators of a ‘post-materialist shift’ as well as of ‘anti-establishment’ and ‘pro-participatory democracy’, the paper examines the frames of democratic opposition in Eastern Europe before 1989. The final part of the paper considers several selected examples from Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic to explore the role of NSMs in the process of shaping new ruralities during the post-communist transformation.     

Civil Society Opposition to Nonferrous Metals Mining in Montana

This paper discusses the opposition of civil society to nonferrous metals mining in Montana. The mineral resources and mining history of Montana are discussed, as is the vibrant civil society of that state. Montana’s civil society has opposed mining due to its environmental effects, particularly upon areas of high conservation value. This opposition has involved litigation and the implementation of a ban on the use of cyanide by the mining industry. The paper concludes with a discussion of whether this opposition to mining has damaged the economy of the state and Montana’s future as an example of the “New West,” wherein amenities based growth act as the principal agent of economic activity.     

和谐社会主义与查韦斯的“21世纪新社会主义”

苏东剧变后，以中国为代表的社会主义国家坚持探索符合本国国情的社会主义发展道路，南美洲国家寻求以社会主义替代资本主义，从而形成世界社会主义的两大亮点。建设社会主义和谐社会的理论与查韦斯的“21世纪新社会主义”理论是其中最活跃且影响最广泛的理论创造与社会实践活动。本文通过对两者之间关系的论述，进一步探讨在经济与文化落后国家建设社会主义模式的多样化及其共同特征，进而提出和谐社会主义是各种模式社会主义的共同目标与更高阶段。     

西方荒诞叙事对中国新时期荒诞派小说表现手法的影响及反思

西方现当代作品对中国新时期新潮小说的影响涵盖主题思想和艺术形式两个方面.就艺术形式而言,西方的荒诞派小说,开始成为文学革命和反思文学史的重要借鉴.寻找其间的相似点是必要的,但应该看到其创造性的贡献.先锋派文学中的荒诞写作技巧是一个自主的、创造性的发挥,先锋派作家群体适应了中国作家反思历史、挑战主流话语的内在需求,实现了西方现代和后现代艺术思潮在中国本土的创造性转化.先锋派的先锋精神在于对自由的追求,已经成为当代文学持久的原动力.     

Family Structure and Quality of Life of Elders in Rural China: The Role of the New Rural Social Pension

Using data from a survey in Ankang district of Shaanxi province of China in 2011, this article examines the protective effect of the New Rural Social Pension (NRSP) on quality of life of rural elders, as well the moderating effect on association between family structure and quality of life. An instrumental variable approach is used. NRSP is shown to significantly improve the quality of life of rural elders, and a robustness check shows that this effect is consistent across different sets of subgroups. Compared with the elders who have at least one son, the quality of life of those who are childless or have only one child is significantly lower. The NRSP is more likely to significantly improve the quality of life of one-child elders. In addition, the associations between the NRSP and the different facets of quality of life of the elders are significant except for the facet of sensory abilities.

新历史主义凸显文本与语境的互动关系,即“历史的文本性”和“文本的历史性”,同时也提出了文学文本“颠覆”与“遏制”的政治功能。细读哈代的《德伯家的苔丝》,可以发现该小说体现了“历史的文本性”和“文本的历史性”意识,哈代在小说中试图对社会的中心意识进行“颠覆”,但其在“颠覆”过程中却又受到历史语境的“遏制”。

Durkheim and pierce on suicide and economic change

This paper is an attempt to build upon Pierce's important finding, a confirmation of Durkheim, that any form of economic disruption or change increases suicide. In this paper, certain aspects of Pierce's method are criticized. The analysis of an expanded and updated data set, using analytic techniques designed for time-series data, suggests that economic disruption per se is not as relevant to the suicide rate as are economic hardship and economic deterioration or improvement.

我国小城镇生态环境建设研究简

小城镇建设是国家宏观经济管理的重要组成部分,更是新型城镇化发展的突破口和有效途径。生态环境下的小城镇建设是“十二五“规划的组成内容,小城镇的生态建设不仅对国民经济效益的整体提高起到至关重要的作用,也促进了农民收入的提高。但是由于很多小城镇在建设过程中只注重经济效益,从而忽略了对环境的保护,对生态环境造成严重的破坏,城镇建设也缺乏整体规划。因此,我们不仅应从道路、环境等各方面加强小城镇的整体建设,还应树立全民环保的意识,努力建设生态化、现代化的新型小城镇。
