Meta-regression is routinely used in the context of meta-analysis to assess the potential impact of covariates on the treatment effect. The limitations and pitfalls of this type of analysis have been documented, however, in particular, it has been claimed that the actual significance levels of the resulting tests can be higher than nominal levels. In order to examine the validity of this claim analytically, the distribution of meta-regression's standard test statistic, in the simplified scenario where the studies are the same size, is derived. The resulting significance levels can be used to give an indication of these more generally and it is found that relatively large numbers of studies are needed to provide actual significance levels that are sufficiently similar to the corresponding nominal levels. These findings can be used to inform those performing standard meta-regression hypothesis tests, so that they can avoid adopting the usual procedure in situations where this is likely to be inappropriate. 相似文献

Proof of efficacy of fixed combination drugs under current guidelines requires that the combination be statistically significantly superior to each component and that, to insure model validity, each component be statistically significantly superior to a placebo. Simulations indicate that if each of these four tests is performed at a significance level of 0,05 then the actual test of effectiveness of the fixed combination drug is done at a significance level that can be as small as 0.0001. This would seem to be excessively conservative. Further simulations indicate that significance levels of approximately 0,10 to 0.20 should be employed for all tests except in unusual circumstances. 相似文献

Understanding tools in the development of practical knowledge and in the formation of social worlds is critical for the sociology of culture insofar as they reveal how matter, or material, informs practice and discourse. This article is an ethnographic exploration of the variations of the maker-tool-material relation in glassblowing, informed by Bourdieu's logic of practice as well as phenomenological considerations of the body's dispositions towards and interactions with the material world. These relations form the backbone of the glassblowing studio, and more importantly provide the subject matter of ‘tool talk,’ studio talk about tools, which forges feelings of empathy and consequently contributes to the formation of the glassblowing social world. Through this exploration, we come to understand how material, the subject of much studio discourse, is a structuring force of a lifeworld, the glassblowing studio.
