Tracing developmental trends in Ira Gordon's programs for children and families

Ira Gordon's work in the area of child and family services is traced for six of his programs according to two main trends: (1) perceptions of families through the years and the changing roles of parents in the education of their children; and (2) curriculum changes in activities brought into homes. Gordon's programs, some being initiated as early as 1966, focused upon parents, infants, toddlers, and school-age children and utilized home visitations as a major intervention strategy. Evidence of successes reported for these programs has shown the impact of early intervention upon children as well as their families, school, and community.

Doing sociological research: the genre of ‘owning up’

This paper presents an account of an access encounter, and uses this case to reinforce the potential for access meetings to provide a rich source of ethnographic data. The paper originates from one of the authors' experience of negotiating research access in a UK local authority social services department. In response to a summary research proposal sent in advance that expressed interest in social work with men, a gatekeeper expressed his concern during an initial meeting that the author might be a ‘paedophile’ wanting to make contact with others of a similar persuasion. This encounter, and the issue of sexual abuse that it introduced, highlights a number of ethical, epistemological and gendered tensions for ethnographic work, which this paper attempts to negotiate. Some of the potential implications of this specific access meeting are discussed, and set within broader methodological and empirical contexts.

Cox regression for current status data with mismeasured covariates

Covariate measurement error problems have been extensively studied in the context of right‐censored data but less so for current status data. Motivated by the zebrafish basal cell carcinoma (BCC) study, where the occurrence time of BCC was only known to lie before or after a sacrifice time and where the covariate (Sonic hedgehog expression) was measured with error, the authors describe a semiparametric maximum likelihood method for analyzing current status data with mismeasured covariates under the proportional hazards model. They show that the estimator of the regression coefficient is asymptotically normal and efficient and that the profile likelihood ratio test is asymptotically Chi‐squared. They also provide an easily implemented algorithm for computing the estimators. They evaluate their method through simulation studies, and illustrate it with a real data example.
