Using data from the New Immigrant Survey, we examine the religious beliefs and practices of new legal immigrants to the United States. We find that Christian immigrants are more Catholic, more Orthodox, and less Protestant than American Christians, and that those immigrants who are Protestant are more likely to be evangelical. In addition to being more Catholic and more Orthodox than American Christians, the new immigrants are also paradoxically less Christian, with a fifth reporting some other faith. Detailed analysis of reported church attendance at places of origin and in the United States suggest that immigration is a disruptive event that alienates immigrants from religious practice rather than “theologizing” them. In addition, our models clearly show that people who join congregations in the United States are highly selected and unrepresentative of the broader population of immigrants in any faith. In general, congregational members were more observant both before and after emigration, were more educated, had more cumulative experience in the United States, and were more likely to have children present in the household and be homeowners and therefore yield biased representations of all adherents to any faith. The degree of selectivity and hence bias also varies markedly both by religion and nationality.  相似文献

A growing body of research investigates the possible relationships between religion and mental health. After developing a series of arguments linking various aspects of religion with anxiety and tranquility, we test relevant hypotheses using data from the 1996 General Social Survey. Results show that frequency of religious attendance and the belief in an afterlife are inversely associated with feelings of anxiety and positively associated with feelings of tranquility. However, frequency of prayer has no direct association with either outcome. Strong beliefs in the pervasiveness of sin are positively linked with anxiety but unrelated to tranquility. Finally, belief in an afterlife and frequency of prayer buffer the adverse effects of poor health and financial decline on anxiety. Implications of these findings are discussed along with study limitations and promising directions for future research.  相似文献

This paper examines how two dimensions of childhood religion—affiliation and participation—are related to the probability of graduating from high school. Hypotheses derived from a human capital model are tested with data on non-Hispanic white and black women from the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth. The empirical findings are generally consistent with the hypotheses, revealing sizeable differentials in the likelihood of obtaining a high-school diploma by affiliation and participation. The results suggest that the convergence of Catholics to the mainline Protestant pattern for non-Hispanic whites found here, and supported by many previous studies, has not taken place in the black population. In other respects, the relationships between religion and high-school graduation are similar for the two racial groups.

论及萨满的特性时 ,以著名宗教史学家M·埃利亚德为首的一些学者 ,赞同用“飞翔”的有无作为识别萨满身份的尺度。以社会人类学家M·刘易斯、日本学者佐佐木宏等为首的一些学者 ,则主张“附体”亦为萨满的基本特性。然而 ,“飞翔”与“附体”之间所具有的相互关系并未得到说明。从“飞翔”与“附体”的历史形成入手 ,探讨两者之间存在的内在关系 ,并对萨满教从精灵崇拜趋向神灵信仰 ,这一发展阶段的性质转换作一概略说明。  相似文献

This paper considers joining the economical characteristics of Italian cities with a relevant sociological aspect of the Catholic saints. More than in other countries, a high percentage of Italian cities are toponyms coming from the name of specific saints (hagiotoponym). The link with Italian religious views is distinct. The statistical analysis of the economic contributions that each hagiotoponym city provides to the Italian GDP is considered. Such an analysis is also based on the comparison with Italian data and is considered with the Theil, Gini, and Herfindahl-Hirschman indices. It is obtained that hagiotoponym cities represent a proxy of the overall Italian reality of medium-sized cities in the case of outliers removal.  相似文献
