ABSTRACTAs codes of ethics play at least a symbolic, if not educational, role in highlighting and informing professional priorities, 16 codes of ethics for social work practice were examined for references to religion and belief and analysed against the four domains of Dinham’s religious literacy framework. Although religion and belief are mentioned in all but two of the documents, approximately half the surveyed codes only mention religion and belief in respect of either knowledge or skills. Some recognise the need for social workers to be aware of their own biases, but few recognise the need to explain what is meant by religion and belief, despite these terms being in flux. While codes of ethics can contribute to the development of religious literacy among social workers, this requires social workers who already have some religious literacy to actively participate when codes of ethics are being revised.IMPLICATIONS
It is an ethical imperative that social workers are able to engage with religion and belief.
Social workers require religious literacy, including skills and knowledge of different religions, recognition of the fluidity of the concepts, “religion” and “belief”, and understanding one’s own attitudes towards religion.
Codes of ethics can contribute to the development of religious literacy among social workers, but this potential is often not realised as fully as it might be.

This study examines the link between religious involvement and racial group identification among Hispanics in the United States. Relying on the multifaceted nature of religious involvement, this study focuses on five dimensions of religious involvement—church attendance, prayer, the importance one places on religion, one's belief in God's love, and religious affiliation. Using the data from the Panel Study of American Religion and Ethnicity (1st wave, 2006), this study employs regression analysis. The results show that, among the five dimensions of religious involvement, only church attendance has a significant effect on racial group identification; Hispanics who frequently attend church are more likely to identify with Hispanics. This study suggests that church attendance increases Hispanics’ group identification for two reasons: first, because of the formation of Hispanic-oriented churches; and second, because of the intense interaction among Hispanics within their church communities. 相似文献

This paper explores the impact of social capital—measured by social trust and social networks—on individual charitable giving
to religious and secular organizations. Using United States data from the national sample of the 2000 Social Capital Community
Benchmark Survey, we find that social trust, bridging social network, and civic engagement increase the amount of giving to
both religious and secular causes. In contrast, organizational activism only affects secular giving. Volunteering activity,
and human and financial capital indicators positively affect both religious and secular giving. Finally, those who are happy
about their lives and those who are religious give more to religious causes, but these factors do not affect secular giving.
We find evidence of important differences in the determinants of religious and secular giving, suggesting the need to distinguish
these two types of charitable giving in future work.

冷战后,美国调整了中东政策,但通过扶持和偏袒以色列来制衡阿拉伯世界的基本原则和控制中东地区的战略意图没有变。结果它既没有造就一个安全而稳定的以色列,也没有有效地控制中东地区,其政策目标与实现手段存在着悖论。本文从宗教的角度分析其中的原因,包括美国是一个宗教社会,犹太教一基督新教是美国社会道德规范和价值观准则的基础,决定着美国外交的大方向;犹太教的“教族合一”奠定了美国犹太人支持以色列的基础,而基督教与犹太教的同一性造就了绝大多数美国国民对以色列的强烈认同;美国犹太人与以色列在美国的院外集团联手左右着美国的中东政策等。 相似文献

Standard social choice experiments generally force subjects to make decisions about giving money to another person, but the ability to avoid information outside of the lab could lead to less altruistic or fair behavior than such experiments tend to suggest. I expand on the design of Dana, Weber, and Kuang (2007) to better study information avoidance in an experimental setting. Subjects are given the chance to avoid information about a recipient’s payoffs in a dictator game. I vary the probability that a dictator’s payoffs will be aligned with the recipient’s in order to assess the role of beliefs on avoidance and test contradictory models. The within-subjects approach shows that even people who are generous in a stark choice will make self-serving decisions when they can avoid knowing the recipient’s outcome. People avoid information more often when the self-serving choice is unlikely to hurt the recipient, which supports Rabin’s model (1995) of moral rules and moral preferences. 相似文献

改革开放以来,庙会作为传承地方文化的载体重新回到人们的视野当中,其所承载的历史可见一斑。以山西忻州所属14县区的50个典型庙会的实证调查资料为主,以庙会中的水神信仰为突破口,探讨其典型的特征,以及在水神系统建构下,其与人、与社会之间互动。通过分析,认为水神在该地的社会地位有所下降,但水神信仰构建的社会体系依然在运作,尤其是在广大农村地区。 相似文献
