Now the Orgy Is Over

Based on six months of ethnographic fieldwork, this study explores the intersections between embodied flesh and digital (re)presentations by examining how participants experience virtual sex on Second Life. We explore how and to what extent Second Life avatars mediate personal desires and fantasies with others who, collaboratively, construct sexual adventures in forms of playful deviance that allow for the emergence of secret sexual selves, as well as how those sexual adventures are ultimately fashioned and experienced in a “diffused life” that is neither of Second Life nor of first but a tightly bound combination of the two. Despite the enormous freedom of Second Life residents for seemingly boundless creative self‐expression, we conclude that these experiences are more bound to and confined within disciplined practices than they first appear.

FROM TEXT TO GESTURE ONLINE: A microethnographic analysis of nonverbal communication in the Second Life virtual environment

A transition from text-based computer-mediated communication (CMC) to online interaction that includes both textual and nonverbal discourse represents a new development in online communication and a significant challenge to prevailing models for the analysis of CMC. This paper presents results of a six-month-long ethnographic research of nonverbal communication (NVC) in the Second Life (SL) virtual environment. A set of 108 SL locations selected in a non-structured manner provided a wide range of communicative contexts for the analysis of naturally occurring user interaction. The study was focused on the analysis of proxemic and kinesic cues. The results have pointed to a significant difference between user-defined and predefined nonverbal cues, indicating that user-defined NVC has stronger potential to enhance online interaction.

国民党政府对日处置政策的出发点是惩罚日本侵略,使之不再构成对中国的威胁,为此在许多问题上,提出了自己的主张,并努力使之付诸实施,某种程度上体现出顺应历史潮流、维护整个中华民族利益的色彩,应该予以肯定。但不久,由于自身地位的变化,社会基础的削弱,为保住其摇摇欲坠的政权和法统地位妥协、退让,最后放弃对日处置政策,出卖中华民族利益,虽然有其受当时的国际国内政治环境制约的因素,但其自身有着不可推卸的历史责任。这不仅对中国、日本,而且对亚太地区的政治、经济和国际关系都产生重大影响。     

On group divisible response surface (GDRS) designs

In this paper some experimental situations are identified corresponding to which suitable response surface designs do not exist. A class of response surface designs is introduced to cope with these situations. Their analysis with and without blocking and methods of construction is discussed.     

ASYMPTOTIC DEFICIENCY OF THE JACKKNIFE ESTIMATOR

In this paper it is shown that the bias-adjusted maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is asymptotically equivalent to the jackknife estimator in the variance up to the order n^-1 and the asymptotic deficiency of the jackknife estimator relative to the bias-adjusted MLE is equal to zero.
