Unclaimed Treasures: Older Women's Reflections on Lifelong Singlehood

ABSTRACT

Ever-single, older women are a diverse group, whose experiences of singlehood have received little attention from researchers. In this qualitative study, eight women between the ages of 65 and 77 living in a mid-sized Southwestern Ontario city were interviewed about being ever single, including their perspectives of the benefits and drawbacks of this status at their current age. Data were collected in semi-structured interviews, and the constant comparative method was used for data analysis. Emergent themes illustrated how the women's stories of singlehood were affected by the sociopolitical contexts of their youth. Upon reflection, the women articulated the benefits of lifelong singlehood, strongly emphasizing their independence and “ability to be alone,” which was viewed as very important as they aged. The drawbacks of singlehood focused on loneliness and the absence of a social support network, which took on particular importance as the women experienced increasing age and frailty. Overall, the participants expressed satisfaction with their marital status and defied common stereotypes about older, single women. Implications of these findings relate to the social structure of marital status and its impact upon the lives of women who remain single.     

Evaluating a Preventive Orientation Program

The present study evaluated a primary prevention, school-based program. The intervention focused on helping youngsters successfully navigate an important transitional event- transfer into a new school. Transitions such as entering a new school pose significant challenges to a child's ability to cope with the process of change. Adjustment difficulties are sometimes associated with school transitions, and transfer students experience anxiety over gaining peer acceptance and meeting school expectations. The present study evaluated the efficacy of a multi-element orientation program in preventing school adjustment problems among children transferring into a new school. The intervention included information, a peer-led discussion group, and a tour. Half the incoming transfer students in an inner-city elementary school were provided the program; the other youngsters served as controls. Children exposed to the preventive intervention, in comparison to controls, were more knowledgeable about the school; however, few differences emerged in adjustment criterion measures.

In this paper some recurrence relations between moments of progressive Type-II right censored order statistics from doubly truncated Burr distribution are established. These recurrence relations would enable one to obtain all the single and product moments of Burr progressive Type-II right censored order statistics in a simple recursive manner.

无线数传在电梯监控系统中的应用

针对现有电梯监控系统布线繁琐,容易出故障的现象,提出使用无线通信的方式传输电梯监控数据。以德国奔克bp304控制系统为平台,采用NRF905射频芯片为无线收发器,M051单片机为主控芯片设计的无线收发模块,并通过功率放大器增加无线通信距离。经过实际测试,通信有效距离达到了1 km,无线通信不仅有效地解决了布线问题,而且节约了整个监控系统的成本。

数字化温度传感器在太阳能热水器中的应用

基于单片机控制的编织袋折边折角装置设计

为提高编织袋折边折角的自动化水平和效率，更好地与编织袋缝纫工序结合起来，文章设计了基于单片机控制的编织袋折边折角装置.首先利用Pro/E 4.0设计了编织袋折边折角装置的机械结构三维模型，然后在Microsoft Office Visio中设计了该设备的气动系统，最后利用AT89C51单片机对该套设备进行设计与控制.结果表明，这套编织袋折边折角装置结构紧凑合理，成本控制在1万多元，单片机控制系统稳定有效，整个折边折角动作耗时在6 s左右，效率较高，能够真正提高编织袋折边折角自动化水平，具有很高的工程实践价值.
