Recurrence relations for single and product moments of record values from generalized pareto distribution

In this paper we establish some recurrence relations satisfied by single and product moments of upper record values from the generalized Pareto distribution. It is shown that these relations may be used to obtain all the single and product moments of all record values in a simple recursive manner. We also show that similar results established recently by Balakrishnan and Ahsanullah (1993) for the upper record values from the exponential distribution may be deduced by letting the shape parameter p tend to 0.     

Recurrence relations for the moments of order statistics from a beta distribution

Certain recurrence relations for the single and product moments of the order statistics of a random sample of sizen arising from a beta distribution are derived. The usefulness of these relations in evaluating the single and product moments of beta order statistics is also discussed.

Analysis of a batch arrival queue with vacation policy and exceptional service

ABSTRACT

We consider the distributions of operating characteristics of an M^[x]/G/1 queue under vacation policies, where the first customer of each busy period receives an exceptional service. When all the customers are served in the system exhaustively, the server deactivates and operates one of two vacation policies: (1) multiple vacation policy and (2) single vacation policy. We develop the performance measures for both systems. Finally, some numerical illustrations are also given. These two vacation models have potential applications in day-to-day life, such as post offices, banks, hospitals, etc.     

Thanks for nothing: Income and labor force participation for never-married mothers since 1982

We examine the changing social and economic characteristics of women who give birth out of wedlock. Using Current Population Survey data collected between 1982 and 2002, we find that never-married mothers remain impoverished. Their income growth over these years was modest despite substantial gains in education, employment, and other individual characteristics generally associated with prosperity. These results affirm the ongoing role of family structure in shaping American inequality.

A skew logistic distribution as an alternative to the model of van Staden and King

The logistic distribution is a simple distribution possessing many useful properties and has been used extensively for analyzing growth. Recently, van Staden and King proposed a quantile-based skew logistic distribution. In this paper, we introduce an alternative skew logistic distribution. We then establish recurrence relations for the computation of the single and product moments of order statistics from the standard skew logistic distribution by using the moments of order statistics from the standard half logistic distribution. These enable an efficient computation of means, variances and covariances of order statistics from the skew logistic distibution for all sample sizes. The results become useful in determining the best linear unbiased estimators of the location and scale paramters of the skew logistic distribution. Finally, we provide an example to illustrate the usefulness of the developed model and then compare its fit with that provided by the model of van Staden and King.
