Traditionally, the introductory statistics course, Principles of Statistics (STAT 101), at Iowa State University has been taught without reference to a statistical analysis computing package. Although important for the implementation of statistical techniques, a computer component has been perceived by instructors to take time away from the coverage of statistical topics. To gauge students' reactions to the usefulness of a statistical computing package, an experiment was conducted during the fall term of 1986. Volunteers from a STAT 101 class were randomly assigned to either a control group or a computer use group. Both groups filled out questionnaires at the beginning and end of the semester. During the semester, the computer use group had access to and instruction in the use of Minitab. This instruction was tied to homework and laboratory assignments for the course. This article presents results of this experiment. On the basis of the responses to the questionnaires, the value of a statistical computing package as a pedagogical tool is examined. Recommendations for the use of a statistical computing package in a large introductory statistics course are made. 相似文献

The World Wide Web (WWW) represents a powerful tool for furthering the development and practice of statistics. The GASP (Globally Accessible Statistical Procedures) WWW site has been set up as a primary listing of statistical procedures which can be used over the WWW. This article highlights several possible approaches for making a procedure WWW accessible. These approaches effectively solve many of the problems typically encountered when using a new statistical procedure. Applying the methods discussed, any statistical technique can be made available to anyone with a forms- or Java-capable WWW browser. Many authors have criticized the use of spreadsheets for statistical data processing and computing because of incorrect statistical functions, no log file or audit trail, inconsistent behavior of computational dialogs, and poor handling of missing values. Some improvements in some spreadsheet processors and the possibility of audit trail facilities suggest that the use of a spreadsheet for some statistical data entry and simple analysis tasks may now be acceptable. We perform human identification by gait recognition where subjects' gait is represented by silhouettes which are elements of a manifold of Square-Root Velocity functions. Gait cycles become stochastic processes on this manifold; cadence its rate of execution. Using geometry of this manifold, we compute mean gait cycle templates for subjects. An observation model, where test sequences are random perturbations of templates, produces likelihood functions for classification. We perform temporal registration—linear and nonlinear—of cycles with templates, removing cadence effects. In an experiment on 26 individuals, linear registration, preserving cadence, performs better than nonlinear registration, which removes cadence. 相似文献

The shift in process mean is reflected in the sequence after X m . The Bayes estimators of shift point m, and past and future process means, μ1 and μ2, are derived using various priors and loss functions. In this article, a transformation method using the principal component analysis approach is first applied to remove the existing autocorrelation within each profile in Phase I monitoring of autocorrelated simple linear profiles. This easy-to-use approach is independent of the autocorrelation coefficient. Moreover, since it is a model-free method, it can be used for Phase I monitoring procedures. Then, five control schemes are proposed to monitor the parameters of the profile with uncorrelated error terms. The performances of the proposed control charts are evaluated and are compared through simulation experiments based on different values of autocorrelation coefficient as well as different shift scenarios in the parameters of the profile in terms of probability of receiving an out-of-control signal. 相似文献

Using divergence measures based on entropy functions, a procedure to test statistical hypotheses is proposed. Replacing the parameters by suitable estimators in the expresion of the divergence measure, the test statistics are obtained. Asymptotic distributions for these statistics are given in several cases when maximum likelihood estimators are considered, so they can be used to construct confidence intervals and to test statistical hypotheses based on one or more samples. In this paper we derive control charts for the variance of a Gaussian process using the likelihood ratio approach, the generalized likelihood ratio approach, the sequential probability ratio method and a generalized sequential probability ratio procedure, the Shiryaev–Roberts procedure and a generalized modified Shiryaev–Roberts approach. Recursive presentations for the calculation of the control statistics are given for autoregressive processes of order 1. In an extensive simulation study these schemes are compared with existing control charts for the variance.
