Sojourning With the Homogeneous Poisson Process

In this pedagogical article, distributional properties, some surprising, pertaining to the homogeneous Poisson process (HPP), when observed over a possibly random window, are presented. Properties of the gap-time that covered the termination time and the correlations among gap-times of the observed events are obtained. Inference procedures, such as estimation and model validation, based on event occurrence data over the observation window, are also presented. We envision that through the results in this article, a better appreciation of the subtleties involved in the modeling and analysis of recurrent events data will ensue, since the HPP is arguably one of the simplest among recurrent event models. In addition, the use of the theorem of total probability, Bayes’ theorem, the iterated rules of expectation, variance and covariance, and the renewal equation could be illustrative when teaching distribution theory, mathematical statistics, and stochastic processes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This article is targeted toward both instructors and students.     

A Statistical Inference Course Based on p-Values

Introductory statistical inference texts and courses treat the point estimation, hypothesis testing, and interval estimation problems separately, with primary emphasis on large-sample approximations. Here, I present an alternative approach to teaching this course, built around p-values, emphasizing provably valid inference for all sample sizes. Details about computation and marginalization are also provided, with several illustrative examples, along with a course outline. Supplementary materials for this article are available online.     

We Must Preach what is Practiced

Much of what we teach in statistics is seldom used in practice. Much of what students need we do not teach.     

Comparisons of Software Packages for Generalized Linear Multilevel Models

We review five software packages that can fit a generalized linear mixed model for data with more than a two-level structure and a multiple number of independent variables. These five packages are MLn, MLwiN, SAS Proc Mixed (Glimmix Macro), HLM, and VARCL. We first discuss the features of each of the five packages. These features include data input and data management, statistical model capabilities, output, and user friendliness. We then compare their performance on several simulated datasets.     

University teaching of econometrics a personal view

University teachers of economics have generally been keen to propound, discuss and criticise alternative points of view on ways of structuring courses in their discipline. Econometricians, by contrast, have in this respect been very neglectful - though their subject has been a university discipline for over a quarter of a century.

This paper appraises broadly the issues relevant to the design of an academic program in econometrics, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and proposes ways in which a blended education in economics and econometrics may best be offered.

Identifying underlying principles in social work law: A teaching and learning approach to the legal framework of decision making

Courses in social work law need to ensure that students know, understand and can apply specific rules of law. However, the sheer volume of law affecting social work and the rapidity with which that law changes require courses in social work law not just to ensure that, but that they are equipped to manage changes in the law. In order to be able to do this, it is argued, the general principles underlying those individual legal rules need to be identified and understood. Students and practitioners need to have educational and professional skills at a higher level of transferability than merely acquiring knowledge of specific legal rules can provide. We use the legal framework of decision making to explain the importance of this approach. The principles of administrative law have been identified as a major component in social work law, and, despite limited exposition in social work law texts, we outline the teaching and learning strategy we have pursued in relation to this topic. |em|We argue that there are thus both educational and practice based reasons for the approach advocated, which we also believe accord with wider imperatives of social work education.

评析使用多媒体课件的英语课堂教学

“计算机技术和网络技术”为基础的多媒体已经实质性的应用于我国的英语教学。值得注意的是它促进了外语教学手段的更新,给传统的课堂教学注入了新的活力,但同时也带来了不少问题。本文针对多媒体课件英语教学的现状,笔者就多媒体课件教学模式、多媒体课件教学的理论基础、多媒体在英语教学的实际应用、多媒体教学过程中存在的突出问题和解决办法提出了个人的见解。
