Goal Setting Process: Supporting Choice in a Feminist Group for Women with Alcohol Problems

ABSTRACT

Women who seek help for alcohol related concerns may have goals ranging from maintaining abstinence to moderating or simply monitoring their drinking. Facilitating a group when participants' goals vary is challenging but not impossible. The potential for slipping into the common stance of identifying abstinence as the most desirable goal can be avoided by sensitive group facilitation. This paper describes how a feminist group intervention employed the group process to support decision-making across a range of goal choices; it provides some guidance on how social group workers can assist in the difficult work of identifying, clarifying, and working toward self-selected goals.     

Production scheduling for apparel manufacturing systems

In this paper, we model an apparel manufacturing system characterized by the co-existence of the two production lines, i.e. traditional, long lead time production line and flexible, short lead time production line. Our goal is to find strategies which decide: (i) the fraction of the total production capacity to be allocated to each individual line, and (ii) the production schedules so as to maximize the overall profits. In this problem, searching for the best solution is prohibited in view of the tremendouscomputing budget involved. Using ordinal optimization ideas, we obtained very encouraging results not only have we achieved a high proportion of 'good enough' designs but also tight profit margins compared to a pre-calculated upper bound. There is also a saving of at least 1/2000 of the computation time.     

Ruin Probabilities of a Dual Markov-Modulated Risk Model

This article is devoted to studying a dual Markov-modulated risk model, which can properly represent, to some extent, surplus processes of companies that pay costs continuously and have occasional gains. We consider both the finite and infnite horizon ruin probabilities under this dual model. Upper and lower bounds of Lundberg type are derived for these ruin probabilities. We also obtain a time-dependent version of Lundberg type inequalities.

A Multiobjective Approach and Empirical Application of Sales-Organization Design

This paper addresses the critical issue of determining the appropriate structural design of a sales organization. We propose a new approach for organizing the selling function using multiobjective modeling techniques. The proposed approach considers the situational characteristics under which the sales organization operates, trade-offs among multiple sales-effectiveness criteria, and the “fit” between the situational characteristics and the structural dimensions (i.e., the structure-contingency relationships). Using data collected from sales branches of brokerage firms, we develop appropriate structural designs for a sales organization using the proposed procedure. The paper concludes by outlining the various decision-making implications of the approach.
