A visual management tool for program planning,project management and evaluation in paediatric health care

This article describes the development and implementation of a custom-designed Excel-based visual management tool. The tool’s purpose was to support program planning and evaluation by our resource support team within a paediatric health care setting. Our aims in developing it were to 1) establish a streamlined process and supporting tools to efficiently plan and prioritize program directions and activities; 2) track progress; and 3) evaluate and report on our performance, outputs and outcomes. A collaborative approach based on the ADKAR (Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability, Reinforcement) change management model and the LEADS (Lead self, Engage others, Achieve results, Develop coalitions, Systems transformation) leadership framework was used to guide the design and implementation processes. Team members reported high perceived effectiveness and efficiency with respect to the tool’s utility in supporting its proposed aims. A graded approach to building knowledge and skills in using the tool, to individual responsibility for data entry, and to accountability by team members facilitated its successful implementation. Administrative support is important for sustainability and continual improvement of the tool to address changing team needs over time.

The public relations paradox of erasure: Damnatio memoriae as public relations strategy and tactic

Public relations scholars study how organizations co-create meaning with engaged stakeholders. Not well understood is how and why such co-creation modifies shared meaning, amplifies change, and even “erases” some piece of memory from the public record with the purpose of redirecting and redefining societal narratives. To help establish erasure as a concept for studying public relations, we draw from Freud’s theory of memory to establish a foundation upon which to critique strategic erasure. We adapt Freud’s theory of memory into the intersecting critique of visual rhetoric as public relations by analyzing, via narrative inquiry, remnants of Imperial Rome that have been modified, amplified, but even erased to present Rome’s modern identity. For centuries, even during Imperial Rome, leaders practiced damnatio memoriae —a modern Latin phrase that means “condemnation of memory.” We use this concept to interrogate the public relations identity process Rome’s leaders have used to modify for emphasis and even obliterate Roman elites’ names and images from the texts of public records by destroying, mutilating and modifying statues and monuments as a means for co-creating new public memory. Such analysis reveals how damnatio memoriae helps elites to redefine the “memory” of the Eternal City.     

Circuits of education,rural gentrification,and family migration from the global city

Although there is recurring empirical evidence of gentrifier families with young children, the importance of education-related factors in the migration and residential decision-making of rural gentrifiers have yet to be fully examined. Using the case study of Cranbrook, Kent, processes of education-led rural gentrification are revealed that are dominated by ‘counter-Londonising’ in-migrants paying premium property prices to buy into exclusive rural school catchment areas. A rural expression of circuits of education is identified, which, to date, are represented as urban-specific strands of gentrification. Conceptually, the paper sheds light on links between education-led urban and rural gentrification; illuminating counterurban population movements tied to the prioritisation of familial relations and domesticity in perceived child-friendly rural environments.     

Visual transparency: Looking behind thick walls

Organizations send a lot of visual information to their stakeholders, via advertisements, PR-releases, etc. The question is whether they are ready to fulfill the need for visual information, when asked. In order to analyze this question we firstly specify the meaning of the visual code, compared to literacy and orality. The distinction made by Peirce, between iconic, indexical and symbolic signs serves as our starting point. The easy availability and the sense of authenticity of visual material are considered as crucial characteristics of the visual code. Next we construct our concept visual information need, indicating what kind of messages are then to be delivered. We hypothesize that the more the visual information need is vague or ill-defined, the more the symbolic code plays a role. And – vice versa – the more precise a question is the more iconic/indexical the presentation should be. Practical examples illustrate this thesis.

近几年,随着高校学分制的推行,英语专业的语法课程教学时数不断减少。如何在新的教学环境下发展英语语法课程成了关注的焦点。本文通过对浙江海洋学院英语专业学分制后的语法课程调查,发现了目前英语语法课程实效低下的问题。在具体分析了英语语法课程存在的问题及原因的基础上,提出了在课程结构,教学方法,教材建设等方面发展语法课程的一些措施,以期满足学生和教学的实际需求,提高英语语法教学的效果。
