Understanding Acculturation,Depressive Symptoms,and the Protective Role of Family Involvement Among Latino(a) Immigrant Families

Although the relationship between varying levels of acculturation and depressive symptoms has been established among Latino(a) youth, the positive role of family involvement in relation to depressive symptoms among immigrant Latino(a) families has been studied less. This study draws on a sample of first-generation Latino(a) youth from the Longitudinal Immigrant Student Adaptation Study and explores the relationship between acculturation levels and depressive symptoms, as well as the protective role of family involvement. Although results do not support a relationship between acculturation and depressive symptoms, family involvement was significantly associated with lower depressive symptoms while taking important sociodemographic variables into consideration. Research and practice implications with Latino(a) immigrant families are discussed.     

The Attitude of the Shari'a Courts to Parental Alienation Syndrome: Understanding the Dynamics of the Syndrome in Arab Society

In addition to the many factors leading to parental alienation syndrome (PAS), including the narcissistic injury felt by the abandoned parent, or the custodial parent's personal difficulty, there are further factors unique to Arab society—including strong influence by the extended family on the child. Although all the components of PAS exist and are well known to the shari'a courts, no parallel concept is found in the Arab legal lexicon. This article presents 1 case of a shari'a court hearing that illustrates this phenomenon. The conclusions indicate that the shari'a court considers this a serious phenomenon and sees coping with the situation as an essential and preliminary condition to the custody hearing.     

Growing Up in a “WE” Family

SUMMARY

When couples choose to parent as a unit (the couple as WE) rather than as autonomous individuals, they and their children both benefit. The current article details some ways that parents can further expand their “couple as WE” into a “family as WE” with active parents and socially perceptive children. The article also discusses ways that family members can start and maintain a family dialogue.     

Training for Civic Leadership

In this article, the authors offer social studies educators a way to deepen students' understanding of civil disobedience as a democratic and nonviolent means of instigating social change. The authors explore the concept of civil disobedience from a historical perspective and examine the justifications and ramifications of each historical example. In addition, they provide several examples of events that are often mistakenly categorized as civil disobedience. Through these examples, the authors develop a sound definition of the concept, while explaining its application to contemporary society. In actualizing the significance of civil disobedience in the secondary social studies classroom, the authors use five components: the historical importance of civil disobedience, the concept of civil disobedience, the argument for civil disobedience, the argument against civil disobedience, and teaching about civil disobedience. They also incorporate civil disobedience into a lesson plan.     

The use of child care center for infants of dual-working families in Korea

Using the first and second wave data of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC), which is comprehensive longitudinal data with a nationally representative birth cohort, this study explores whether and when dual-working families place their infants and toddlers in child care centers and what factors influence these families' selection process. Among the 2078 families examined in the PSKC, 466 dual-working families which had any kind of nonparental care arrangement for their very young children at the time of the second survey were included in the analysis. Since our research questions address when the use of child care centers occurred, an event history analysis was conducted. The results show that 32.4% of the families had placed their infants in child care centers prior to the second interview. Family structure and income variables (number of children, nonparental adults in the household, and household income), mother's education level, and the mother's number of working hours turned out to be significantly related to the probability of child care center use.     

Evaluación de las actitudes proambientales en trabajadores de grandes organizaciones

Resumen

Este trabajo se enmarca dentro de un proyecto de investigación que pretende el diseño de un programa de intervención, a través del que se trata de dilucidar el papel de las grandes organizaciones en la integración de actitudes ambientales sostenibles en la vida de cada día.

El planteamiento de la investigación surge del reconocimiento de la necesidad de fomentar el cambio en las prácticas y actitudes de las personas hacia el entorno, y en el presente trabajo se informará de los resultados obtenidos en la primera fase, consistentes en la evaluación de las actitudes proambientales y de las dimensiones más relevantes que caracterizan la respuesta ambiental.

Mediante un instrumento de cuestionario, se pretende desglosar cada componente implicado en la actitud, de acuerdo con el modelo de Rosenberg y Hovland (1960) y la obtención de la estructura dimensional que caracteriza la respuesta evaluativa de los trabajadores de dos organizaciones públicas. Las dimensiones obtenidas son analizadas por medio de procedimientos multivariados y comentadas en relación con un conjunto de escalas de preocupación medioambiental.

2008年至2012年在十一届全国人大和全国政协两会期间,多名代表先后提出废除嫖宿幼女罪的议案及提案,引起了社会的强烈反响,之后,该问题遂成为公众议论与关注的焦点,学术界也对之展开了热烈的探讨。为了推进对这一问题的深入研究,很有必要回顾嫖宿幼女罪出台的法律依据和历史背景,考察和分析嫖宿幼女罪的文献和课题研究及网上争论,以及嫖宿幼女罪在法律上存在的弊端,以促进法律体系的不断完善,保证女性在法律上的权利,更好地保护幼女的身心健康,全面促进社会和谐发展。     

《文心雕龙札记》：古代文论研究现代转型的一个典型文本

《文心雕龙札记》突破以笺注、评点为主的传统读经之法,侧重理论阐释来探究《文心雕龙》的文论特质,凸显义理申发的色彩,奠定了现代“龙学”的研究基础。批判文以载道传统、推重科学求真意识,以及对文本内在体系的细细爬梳,《文心雕龙札记》新中夹旧的文论书写形态标举了古代文论研究转型的一个典型文本,也开后世“龙学”研究的诸多法门。     

对外汉语报刊阅读课的教学策略

通过多年的课堂教学和对学习者阅读过程的调查研究发现,要想让对外汉语报刊阅读教学达到既定的教学目标,取得最好的教学效果,教师在教学过程中应采用3种教学策略：一是用图式理论来指导学生的阅读,补足学生认知结构中缺少而阅读理解必备的知识空位;二是注意分配讲和练的比例关系,注重对学生阅读能力的培养;三是使学生在课堂教学中获得阅读技能在课外的泛读作业中得到延伸。
