It is often assumed that a relationship exists between knowledge about Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and AIDS, and perceptions of risk concerning HIV infection. However, this assumption has not stood up to empirical scrutiny. Researchers have, therefore, started to search for factors that might indirectly link these constructs. This paper reports findings demonstrating that the relationship between levels of perceived HIV risk and levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge are indirectly linked by the extent to which others are perceived to be a risk. A total of 152 prison staff participated and were assessed with regard to their levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge, perceived personal risk of occupational HIV infection and the extent to which they perceived other occupational groups to be at risk of occupational HIV infection. It is argued that this indirect linkage represents a form of reappraisal coping. The ideas of optimistic bias are also extended to the occupational setting in terms of relative risk judgements. Results indicated that prison staff made realistic relative risk judgements. However, such judgements were unrelated to levels of knowledge. Implications for eduational and training interventions are suggested.  相似文献

Abstract

Best planning day ever, green, fun, play, flexible … are terms not usually associated with strategic planning. At the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), plans to open a new library building in 2016 have ignited discussions about the library of the future, its meaning and role in a digital world, and the implications of further rapid changes. The Library's strategic planning process in 2010 was an opportunity to take the collective energy further by involving library staff in the strategic thinking and planning. The process aimed to provide conditions for open conversation through Gadamerian play, and creative modelling based on ideas of revealing and imagineering. The planning started with a playful engagement to generate ideas and promote divergent thinking, and moved through several stages of increasingly convergent thinking to arrive at strategic actions, which were created and supported by all participants. The formal goals of strategic planning were maintained throughout the process and resulted in a client-focused annual plan. This article considers issues of organizational creativity and strategic planning, and relates them to experiences with the strategic planning at the UTS Library. It argues for a systematic approach to fostering creativity and innovation in libraries.  相似文献

Abstract

This demonstration study explored the use of connected technologies in a continuous quality improvement (CQI) approach to implementing evidence-based practices in after-school. Focus group with staff indicated enjoyment of technology and offered feedback for future development. Ecological momentary assessments (EMA) were gathered daily. Three randomized conditions were compared among 4 programs and 12 staff implementing PAX Good Behavior Game (PAX GBG). Analysis of variance (ANOVA), Post-Hoc Tukey, and chi-square analyses indicated that the tech-enhanced condition showed better implementation using scoreboards than the in person, while similar in game length. Both were superior to the control in behavioral strategies; highlighting the promise of technology in capacity building.  相似文献

Abstract

Objective: In order to address increasing health care costs associated with obesity, this study sought to determine prevalence of overweight and obesity and examine eating behaviors, food choices, health beliefs, and attitudes of university employees. Participants and Methods: An online survey was distributed to > 3,800 faculty and staff at a large public metropolitan university in Winter 2008. Results: Almost half (48%) of 806 respondents were classified as overweight or obese. Compared to those with normal weights, overweight and obese respondents consumed fewer fruits and vegetables (p < .05), were less confident in making healthful food choices (p < .001), and were more influenced by food choices available in on-campus dining facilities (p < .05). Conclusions: Obesity among university employees warrants attention. Because these employees have less self-efficacy and consume less healthful diets than their normal weight colleagues, universities need to improve on-campus access to healthful foods.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Data from a large sample of nursing homes were used to examine the cross-sectional association between use of agency staff, regular staff, and quality. Agency use data came from a survey conducted in 2003 (N?=?1071 nursing homes). The agency and regular staff measures were for nurse aides, licensed practical nurses, and registered nurses. We used a single quality factor constructed from the 14 quality measures in Nursing Home Compare. More agency nurse aides resulted in a smaller increase in quality, compared to the use of an equivalent number of regular nurse aides. Agency registered nurse staff were associated with better quality factor scores, especially in the presence of high levels of regular licensed practical nurses. Our results have policy and practice implications, the most significant of which is that agency registered nurses may be beneficial in a wide variety of circumstances, whereas agency nurse aides and licensed practical nurses should be used with caution.  相似文献

Discharge planning services have become very important to older adults who are subject to shortened hospital stays due to the prospective payment form of reimbursement based on diagnostic related groups (DRGs). A study of older adults discharged from three acute care hospitals in New York City shows a direct association between patients' satisfaction with their discharge plan and the number of services arranged by discharge planners. Patients told, "your DRGs are up" as the reason for their discharge, needed the greatest amount of help with activities of daily living. Implications for social workers offering discharge planning services are addressed.  相似文献
