Student Veterans: Meaning in Life,Negative Career Thoughts,and Depression

Student veterans may experience challenges as they transition from military to student life, including adjusting to the academic environment, coping with mental health concerns, and redefining their identities. Research indicates that veterans may have difficulty finding meaning and purpose outside of the military (Brenner et al., 2008; Doenges, 2011). This study explored variables that may affect meaning and purpose in student veterans' lives, specifically negative career thoughts and depression. One hundred thirty-two student veterans at U.S. institutions were surveyed. The results revealed that both negative career thoughts and depression were statistically significant predictors (p < .001) of the presence of meaning in life, with 46% of the variance in the presence of meaning in life scores accounted for by participants' negative career thinking and depression levels. Pearson correlations indicated that all variables were statistically significant (p < .01). Future research could explore how other career readiness and self-assessment constructs are related to meaning and purpose in student veterans' lives, as well as the intersection of mental health and career factors. Interventions that focus both on the presence of negative career thoughts and depressive symptomatology may positively influence student veterans' report of meaning and purpose in life.

教育思想的转变是实施素质教育的前提。教育思想观念要实现以下转变从单纯的专业教育向综合素质教育转变;从重理工轻人文向文理并重转变;在教学观上变“三中心”为“三注重”;在学生的素质培养上,变重智主义的片面发展为整体素质的和谐发展;在学校教育与就业的关系上,变一次性教育为终身教育;在对待集体与个人的关系上,确立集体主义与个性和谐发展相统一的观念。     

禅宗天衣义怀禅师生平事迹及思想略考

天衣义怀为云门下四世,禅门一代宗匠,对北宋云门宗兴盛与发展起到巨大的促进作用;培养出很多到京城传法并产生重大影响的出色弟子;北宋中后期著名云门禅僧中很多人皆出自其法系。鉴于义怀在云门宗中的特殊地位,以及现存早期佛教史料对其生平与思想记载的不足,时人对其思想研究的纰漏,据现有相关资料对其生平事迹、思想等做相关分析、研究,有利于更真实、客观地了解义怀;更全面、深层次地理解其思想,并同时为做更多与义怀相关的研究提供一定的帮助与参考。     

The Perceptions and Needs of Farm Dwellers Regarding Aging,Advanced Age,and Future Perspectives

Abstract

This article reports on a multidisciplinary study that was undertaken by the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education. This study was done on certain farms in the North West Province of South Africa and called the FLAGH study, meaning the Farm Labour, Agriculture and General Health study. This article reports on a need assessment of farm dwellers done during the second half of 2002 and focuses specifically on perceptions and needs regarding aging, advanced age and future perspectives of aged farm dwellers.

The objective of this study was to ascertain the psychosocial needs and problems of farm dwellers in order to eventually design, implement and evaluate a programme aimed at the improvement of the quality of life of farm dwellers. An exploratory study was done, utilising in-depth interviewing according to a schedule of both quantitative and qualitative nature. Certain aspects, like the attitude of the community towards the elderly, relationships of the elderly with peers, children, grandchildren and spouses were dealt with in this study. Topics like the needs or problems of the elderly, nearing death, old age homes and retirement were also covered in this project.     

The Feasibility of IFI‐Led Institutional Reform: Four Turkish Experiments Compared

Institutional reform has proved an enduring theme in the lending programmes of international financial institutions (IFIs) such as the IMF and the World Bank. But research harbours strong objections to the feasibility of IFI‐led institutional restructuring. This article evaluates these objections in the light of evidence from Turkey, a country with an early record of programme‐based reform initiatives in many institutional domains. Drawing on Turkey's central bank independence, banking regulation, anti‐corruption and agricultural subsidy reforms, it argues that IFI‐guided institutional restructuring may indeed encounter severe feasibility problems unless prescribed and implemented in a propitious environment marked by powerful international norms, widely accepted design templates, high levels of bureaucratic preparedness, and active endorsement from key domestic players.

过去的20年,中国农村的生活水平得到了很大的提高,但是在社会发展方面却进步较小。新农村建设的核心是农村发展观的转变。这个转变包括三个方面的含义:其一,农村不再单纯地等于农业,不再是单纯向城市提供农产品的地方,而是可以成为人民安居乐业的所在;其二,农村不再是可以任其消亡的穷乡僻壤,而是可以体面地生活的地方;其三,农村将在自我管理的基础上重建组织和文化秩序。新的农村发展观将以"低度发展,高度和谐"为特征,以提高农村居民的福利为最终目标。在新农村建设中,政府的参与必不可少,其媒介是村民委员会。
