回归童年 渴望真爱——谈凯瑟琳·曼斯菲尔德新西兰儿童题材短篇小说的创作思想

Negotiating Personal Experience over the Lifetime: Narrative Elasticity as an Analytic Tool

Sociology and neighboring disciplines have produced different analytic tools to examine the dialogical relationship between individuals and society (“narrative work,” “identity work,” “moral career,” “moral breakdown”). However, the question of how individuals negotiate the interpretation of personal experience over their lifetimes in a changing cultural context remains unexplored. This article introduces narrative elasticity as a feature of narrative work and as a time‐sensitive analytic tool for conducting inquiries into processes of temporal retraction and expansion of what storytellers conceive as the normal order of significance. The application of this tool to the analysis of mature and elderly Chileans' life stories shows how cultural change occurs at the individual level, considers factors that motivate and inhibit processes of reinterpretation of personal experience, and identifies different levels at which it operates.

贾岛“推敲”的故事,从晚唐开始就有两种版本流传,其情节甚至被正史采纳。但从事件发生的时间、贾岛的交游关系以及文献记录等角度可以考察出,该事件实为后人的杜撰。捕风捉影未必无因,该流言形成及流传的原因是多方面的,它既与贾岛自身狷狂又怪癖的性格及苦吟诗风有关,也受到唐朝科举制度、干谒之风和书写传奇之风流行等社会因素的影响,此外,地域和贾岛在后代的接受史也促进了该流言转变为事实。古代文学史中有很多史事是由流言演变而来,通过对这些事件的还原和解释可以有助于了解文学发生、发展的轨迹,为文学作品的研究提供真实的背景。

《小说林》短篇小说的类型多样,在晚清期刊中具有短篇小说文体方面的典型特征,具体体现在作品的叙事模式、内容是否为横截面、情节结构和人物塑造、语言是文言还是白话等方面。从中不仅可以认识《小说林》短篇小说在文体革新上的依据及其与传统古代短篇小说不同的文体特征,其价值也值得重估。     

From Detention Camps of Thailand to Freedom in the Foothills of North Carolina: One Family’s Remarkable Story

In the 1980s, a number of Hmong families relocated from Thailand detention camps to the United States. This research explores one such family. The family became the key informant in snowball sampling for a larger, ongoing study. Following a series of interviews, qualitative narrative life stories were created and themes of family preservation, survival, and perpetuation of Hmong culture began to emerge. Importantly, parental concerns about how to keep the family intact despite different levels of acculturation surfaced during the process. The purpose of this research was to examine one family’s attempts to preserve the oral history of the Hmong culture and to promote understanding across generations and community members from different cultural backgrounds. The interviews gave the family a forum to expose and discuss their secret journey along with their sacrifices and triumphs. Significantly, the sense of urgency to blend the Hmong and American cultures was profound.     

Spartacus at the Foot of the Alps: A Metaphor for the Fear of Growth

An incident from the Spartacus War (73–71 B.C.) is used as a metaphor to explore barriers to change and fear of growth in the relationship of a woman dying of cancer and her daughter. Paradox in family relationships and the use of metaphors in family therapy are explored, as are fear of the unknown, habitual transactional patterns, embedded personal narratives, and the impact of one's support network on positive change. When mother and daughter retreat behind walls created by psychological and emotional defenses, thoughts are offered on ways to overcome these barriers.     

对赛珍珠短篇小说作品的语料库检索分析--以《圣诞的早晨》为例

在诸多文学作品分析手段中,借助语料库检索工具分析作品的写作特色是一种较为新颖而客观的分析手段。词汇分析工具Range可用于分析文学作品的词汇难度,而语料库检索工具Antconc的主题词表、关键词表、语境共现和主题词分布图等相关功能可更好地分析小说作品的要素。对赛珍珠短篇小说《圣诞的早晨》的语料库分析结果显示,赛珍珠的该篇小说作品整体词汇难度不高,Antconc软件的词表功能可以推测小说的主要人物和故事情节,Antconc软件的语境共现功能有助于对小说的某一要素进行详尽分析。运用语料库分析文学作品,可为文学研究提供新的思路。
