The purpose of this paper is to identify a relationship between pupils' mathematics and reading test scores and the characteristics of students themselves, stratifying for classes, schools and geographical areas. The data set of interest contains detailed information about more than 500,000 students at the first year of junior secondary school in the year 2012/2013, provided by the Italian Institute for the Evaluation of Educational System. The innovation of this work is in the use of multivariate multilevel models, in which the outcome is bivariate: reading and mathematics achievement. Using the bivariate outcome enables researchers to analyze the correlations between achievement levels in the two fields and to predict statistically significant school and class effects after adjusting for pupil's characteristics. The statistical model employed here explicates account for the potential covariance between the two topics, and at the same time it allows the school effect to vary among them. The results show that while for most cases the direction of school's effect is coherent for reading and mathematics (i.e. positive/negative), there are cases where internal school factors lead to different performances in the two fields.  相似文献

Bayesian shrinkage methods have generated a lot of interest in recent years, especially in the context of high‐dimensional linear regression. In recent work, a Bayesian shrinkage approach using generalized double Pareto priors has been proposed. Several useful properties of this approach, including the derivation of a tractable three‐block Gibbs sampler to sample from the resulting posterior density, have been established. We show that the Markov operator corresponding to this three‐block Gibbs sampler is not Hilbert–Schmidt. We propose a simpler two‐block Gibbs sampler and show that the corresponding Markov operator is trace class (and hence Hilbert–Schmidt). Establishing the trace class property for the proposed two‐block Gibbs sampler has several useful consequences. Firstly, it implies that the corresponding Markov chain is geometrically ergodic, thereby implying the existence of a Markov chain central limit theorem, which in turn enables computation of asymptotic standard errors for Markov chain‐based estimates of posterior quantities. Secondly, because the proposed Gibbs sampler uses two blocks, standard recipes in the literature can be used to construct a sandwich Markov chain (by inserting an appropriate extra step) to gain further efficiency and to achieve faster convergence. The trace class property for the two‐block sampler implies that the corresponding sandwich Markov chain is also trace class and thereby geometrically ergodic. Finally, it also guarantees that all eigenvalues of the sandwich chain are dominated by the corresponding eigenvalues of the Gibbs sampling chain (with at least one strict domination). Our results demonstrate that a minor change in the structure of a Markov chain can lead to fundamental changes in its theoretical properties. We illustrate the improvement in efficiency resulting from our proposed Markov chains using simulated and real examples.  相似文献

本文认为中产阶层不等于中等收入群体,应该从收入、职业和教育多个维度分析我国中产阶层的规模与结构。本文分析了中国综合社会调查(CGSS)2005年、2010年、2013年的数据,发现我国中等收入群体所占的比例已经较大,但真正意义上的中产阶层的比例仍然较小。中产阶层越来越集中于城市和东部地区,城乡之间、地区之间的社会结构差异越来越大,第一产业中的中产阶层发展也遇到了较大阻碍。本文认为,要壮大中产阶层,应该进一步增加居民收入,推动产业、职业结构调整,普及教育,推动农村地区、中西部地区中产阶层的发展,扶持农民工依靠技能提升、自主经营进入中产阶层。  相似文献

This study examines the extent to which the way immigrant parents are selected and admitted matters in the educational attainment of childhood immigrants above and beyond the effects of conventional factors of immigrant vulnerability and resources. Using Canada’s 2011 National Household Survey linked with immigrant landing records, this study finds large differences by admission class in university completion rates for childhood immigrants. Children of skilled workers and business immigrants had much higher university completion rates than children of refugees who, in turn, had higher rates than children of live-in caregivers and in the family class. Advantages or disadvantages associated with the admission class of immigrant parents are passed on to their children, resulting partly from group differences in the education and language ability of parents, and partly from the unique pre- and post-migration circumstances experienced by each immigrant class.  相似文献

Time use is both a cause of social inequality and a consequence of social inequality. However, how social class stratifies time use patterns is seldom studied. In this paper, I describe the time use patterns in the years 1983 and 2015 by social class, and gender in the British context. Using sequence analysis methods, I show how the diversity of time use patterns in British society is socially stratified. I find that 13 clusters capture the heterogeneity of time use patterns and that these clusters are associated with social class, gender, and day of the week. These clusters capture patterns of paid and unpaid work schedules, as well as leisure patterns. The results show that men have experienced a reduction of the standard Monday to Friday 8-hr working day, while women have experienced a general increase in this type of schedule. On the other hand, patterns of domestic working days have reduced for women and increased for men. Important differences exist in paid and unpaid work patterns between social classes. Working-class women have experienced an important increase in shift work on weekends. They are also much more likely to be doing unpaid work on weekdays compared to upper-class and middle-class women. Working-class men are more likely to experience non-working days and leisure days on both weekdays and weekends and are more likely to be doing shift work. They are also more often doing unpaid work on weekdays compared to men in upper-class households. Patterns of childcare indicate that all families have increased their childcare time. Men in upper-class households in particular have experienced an important growth in childcare time between 1983 and 2015. I conclude by discussing how time use can further our understanding of social stratification.  相似文献

The alleviation of wicked problems requires collective action because these issues are characterized by significant uncertainty and complexity. This research extends prior work by examining how conveners' use robust action to navigate wicked problems' defining characteristics in the mobilization process. It provides a longitudinal study of a health care nonprofit attempting to engage other stakeholders in addressing the high costs and inadequate quality of health care in a region of the United States. Specifically, the convener sought to address this wicked problem by developing a health information exchange. The findings relate five robust action tactics through which the convener advanced collective action.  相似文献

By employing a Bourdieu‐inspired class scheme that differentiates between classes’ volume and composition of capital, and by analysing Norwegian administrative register data for birth cohorts between 1987 and 1992, this paper examines the relationship between social class background and gender‐(a)typical choices of higher education. Fields of study in higher education in much of the Western world remain segregated by gender despite the gender gap in educational attainment having been reversed. However, some changes have taken place due to the influx of women into male‐dominated, high‐status fields. Few recent studies have examined the relationship between social class background and gendered educational choices in light of these changes; furthermore, the focus of previous research has been limited to the vertical dimension of class. The results presented in this article suggest that men and women are more likely to make gender‐atypical choices when this leads to social mobility and that focusing solely on the vertical dimension of class may mask horizontal differences.  相似文献

In the seemingly routine and the everyday, lie layers of cultural and social symbolism. So it is with dirt. This article examines the social and cultural roles of dirt within socialization practices in working‐class industrial and ex‐industrial communities. Drawn from oral history accounts with 46 former and current engineering apprentices, the discussion demonstrates dirt as a concept and a practicality, and how the idea of ‘getting dirty’ provided a cultural imagery used to renegotiate moral boundaries that devalue working class, masculine experiences and identities. Building on from the work of Skeggs (1997, 2004, 2011), it demonstrates the lived experience of value within the industrial workplace past and present. Through dirt, the role of cultural artefacts and iconography within working‐class experience and workplace training is explored. Additionally, the role of a cultural icon like dirt in the intergenerational dialogues of workplace communities is given new attention. In doing so the article argues that while after decades of underinvestment in apprenticeships as a model for training in the UK, a recent resurgence in interest can go some way in overcoming the long‐term effects of the loss of large‐scale industrial work. However, the cultures of work attached to the apprenticeships of the past are, within deindustrialization, much more complicated to develop or recreate.  相似文献

The financialization of food and agricultural land has been a critical driver of the “land-grabbing” phenomenon in the post 2007–2008 period: the potential for land to be both a productive and financial asset has driven interest in long-term land rentals and sales. Scholars and activists have highlighted the negative effects of these trends for rural populations. International institutions have promoted the recognition of land rights as a means to secure land from seizure, ensure equal participation in land acquisitions, and enable low-income populations, including women, to access credit. At the same time, activists are promoting collective land rights, customary modes of land tenure and the rights of Indigenous peoples. For activists, land reform models that promote the collective rights of peoples to govern land are critical to resisting individualized land ownership models that encourage the alienation of land. This article reviews these rights-based frameworks using a critical feminist perspective and argues that both the institutionalist and activist approaches require more nuanced understandings of gender and difference in order to effect gender-equitable change. This article concludes by mapping new feminist research directions that consider land and resources within the context of local–global processes, the global economy, intersectionality and global rights-based discourses.  相似文献
