ABSTRACT

Holm's step-down testing procedure starts with the smallest p-value and sequentially screens larger p-values without any information on confidence intervals. This article changes the conventional step-down testing framework by presenting a nonparametric procedure that starts with the largest p-value and sequentially screens smaller p-values in a step-by-step manner to construct a set of simultaneous confidence sets. We use a partitioning approach to prove that the new procedure controls the simultaneous confidence level (thus strongly controlling the familywise error rate). Discernible features of the new stepwise procedure include consistency with individual inference, coherence, and confidence estimations for follow-up investigations. In a simple simulation study, the proposed procedure (treated as a testing procedure), is more powerful than Holm's procedure when the correlation coefficient is large, and vice versa when it is small. In the data analysis of a medical study, the new procedure is able to detect the efficacy of Aspirin as a cardiovascular prophylaxis in a nonparametric setting.  相似文献

Abstract

The use of indices as an estimation tool of process capability is long-established among the statistical quality professionals. Numerous capability indices have been proposed in last few years. Cpm constitutes one of the most widely used capability indices and its estimation has attracted much interest. In this paper, we propose a new method for constructing an approximate confidence interval for the index Cpm. The proposed method is based on the asymptotic distribution of the index Cpm obtained by the Delta Method. Under some regularity conditions, the distribution of an estimator of the process capability index Cpm is asymptotically normal.  相似文献

Simultaneous confidence intervals for the p means of a multivariate normal random variable with known variances may be generated by the projection method of Scheffé and by the use of Bonferroni's inequality. It has been conjectured that the Bonferroni intervals are shorter than the Scheffé intervals, at least for the usual confidence levels. This conjecture is proved for all p≥2 and all confidence levels above 50%. It is shown, incidentally, that for all p≥2 Scheffé's intervals are shorter for sufficiently small confidence levels. The results are also applicable to the Bonferroni and Scheffé intervals generated for multinomial proportions.  相似文献

Statements that are inherently multiplicative have historically been justified using ratios of random variables. Although recent work on ratios has extended the classical theory to produce confidence bounds conditioned on a positive denominator, this current article offers a novel perspective that eliminates the need for such a condition. Although seemingly trivial, this new perspective leads to improved lower confidence bounds to support multiplicative statements. This perspective is also more satisfying as it allows comparisons that are inherently multiplicative in nature to be properly analyzed as such.  相似文献

The problems of constructing tolerance intervals for the binomial and Poisson distributions are considered. Closed-form approximate equal-tailed tolerance intervals (that control percentages in both tails) are proposed for both distributions. Exact coverage probabilities and expected widths are evaluated for the proposed equal-tailed tolerance intervals and the existing intervals. Furthermore, an adjustment to the nominal confidence level is suggested so that an equal-tailed tolerance interval can be used as a tolerance interval which includes a specified proportion of the population, but does not necessarily control percentages in both tails. Comparison of such coverage-adjusted tolerance intervals with respect to coverage probabilities and expected widths indicates that the closed-form approximate tolerance intervals are comparable with others, and less conservative, with minimum coverage probabilities close to the nominal level in most cases. The approximate tolerance intervals are simple and easy to compute using a calculator, and they can be recommended for practical applications. The methods are illustrated using two practical examples.  相似文献

Three parameters—sample size, sampling intervals, and the control limits—must be determined when the x bar chart to monitor a manufacturing process. The constant sampling intervals were widely employed because of its administrative simplicity. However, the variable sampling interval (VSI) has recently been shown to give substantially faster detection of most process shifts than fixed-sampling-interval (FSI) for x-bar charts. In addition, these measurements in the subgroup are assumed to be normally distributed. That assumption may not be tenable. This investigation compares the economic design of x-bar control charts for non normal data under Weibull shock models with various sampling avenues.  相似文献

By representing fair betting odds according to one or more pairs of confidence set estimators, dual parameter distributions called confidence posteriors secure the coherence of actions without any prior distribution. This theory reduces to the maximization of expected utility when the pair of posteriors is induced by an exact or approximate confidence set estimator or when a reduction rule is applied to the pair. Unlike the p-value, the confidence posterior probability of an interval hypothesis is suitable as an estimator of the indicator of hypothesis truth since it converges to 1 if the hypothesis is true or to 0 otherwise.  相似文献

This article shows that the confidence intervals based on the FMA estimator suggested by Hjort and Claeskens (2003 Hjort , N. L. , Claeskens , G. ( 2003 ). Frequestist model average estimators . J. A simultaneous confidence band provides useful information on the plausible range of an unknown regression model function, just as a confidence interval gives the plausible range of an unknown parameter. For a multiple linear regression model, confidence bands of different shapes, such as the hyperbolic band and the constant width band, can be constructed and the predictor variable region over which a confidence band is constructed can take various forms. One interesting but unsolved problem is to find the optimal (shape) confidence band over an ellipsoidal region χE under the Minimum Volume Confidence Set (MVCS) criterion of Liu and Hayter (2007 Liu, W., Hayter, A.J. This problem is challenging as it involves optimization over an unknown function that determines the shape of the confidence band over χE. As a step towards solving this difficult problem, in this paper, we introduce a family of confidence bands over χE, called the inner-hyperbolic bands, which includes the hyperbolic and constant-width bands as special cases. We then search for the optimal confidence band within this family under the MVCS criterion. The conclusion from this study is that the hyperbolic band is not optimal even within this family of inner-hyperbolic bands and so cannot be the overall optimal band. On the other hand, the constant width band can be optimal within the family of inner-hyperbolic bands when the region χE is small and so might be the overall optimal band.  相似文献
