LGBTQ Activist Organizations as ‘Respectably Queer’ in India: Contesting a Western View

This study contests the distinction of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) organizations suggested by earlier scholars as ‘respectable’ — i.e. normalizing, professionalizing and conforming to the dominant cultural and institutional patterns — and ‘queer’, meaning challenging the cultural and institutional forces that ‘normalize and commodify differences’. Using Bernstein's model of identity deployment, it is found problematic to distinguish LGBTQ organizations this way because when the actions of LGBTQ organizations are more complex to describe, it is not warranted to conflate identity goals with identity strategies — whether normalizing (respectable) or differentiating (queer). To examine these concerns, a qualitative inquiry was used to study five LGBTQ organizations in India where the intersections of post‐colonial ethnicity, gender, social class and sexuality offer an intriguing context through which to study queer activism. Based on the findings, it is argued from a post‐colonial perspective that when the socio‐cultural and historical existence of non‐homonormative queer communities and practices is strong, LGBTQ organizations challenge the heteronormative and/or other forms of domination to become ‘queer’. But they may simultaneously become ‘respectable′ by conforming to the diversity politics of non‐profit business, donors, and social movement organizations they seek support from, and turn out as ‘respectably queer’.     

The Inherent Politics of Managing the Quality of Urban Green Spaces

Although the term ‘quality’ has a universal positive connotation and typically is framed by a focus on improvements, its application includes as well as excludes the access, values and world views of particular actors and interests. In this article, we highlight the relevance and implications of such ‘inherent politics’ through a case study of a widespread approach to operationalizing quality in urban green space management. We conclude that adoption of any quality model has both limiting and enabling implications for public participation and decision-making and that a critical stance is needed within both research and practice for the development of quality models that connect to values of broader societal relevance.

旅游宣传资料的英译是译者、作者和国外游客之间的一种跨时空、跨文化交际活动.旅游宣传资料的翻译者必须增强自身的跨文化敏感性,既精通两种语言又熟谙两种文化,最大限度地兼容交际双方的语言习惯、文化心理、交际规约和价值标准差异.本文试以比较中英旅游宣传资料在遣字用词、句式结构、谋篇布局、文本内容等方面的差异为路径,揭示中英两种语言体系所承载的语言习惯、价值观念、思维模式、民族心理、审美情趣等跨文化交际要素的差异,并提出跨文化交际视阈下的旅游宣传资料英译的原则和方法.     

文化公民身份的认同问题探究

文化公民身份问题是一种试图通过建立沟通性社会而设置的论题,它通过解构文化中存在的主体与客体建构的中心—边缘结构,消解二元结构所产生的不平等文化对人们生活造成严重负面影响;通过纳入“他者”视角,从文化的主体间性形成的平等关系,寻找认同和承认的政治空间,从而重塑新型共同体。审视文化公民身份认同在社会转型时期发挥的作用,为公民身份认同问题研究呈现一种新的转机和希望,并为解决全球化背景下人类遭遇的环境生态危机、资源枯竭、粮食短缺和核危机等难题指明出路。     

外语文化回应教学透视

语言与文化密切相关。从本质上讲,外语教学就是以语言知识讲授为基础的文化教学。作为多元文化教学模式,外语文化回应教学突显语言与文化的互动,强调外语教学的文化立场,回应多元文化差异,旨在培养学习者的跨文化理解能力。在语言环境中审视文化,将语言教学提升至文化理解的层面,顺应了文化多元化的时代发展趋势,是当代外语教学研究的一大突破。

2014年湖南散文创作成绩斐然,个性化表达成为其鲜明标志,其中包含了两个重要方面:在思想情感方面,以个性化的情感体验和对现实人生的个性化思考为亮点;在文体方面,则表现为独特的历史文化品位以及叙述手法的革新。     

从“少数人”到“心智成熟的民众”--利维斯的文化批评与“共同体”形塑

不少学者对利维斯的批判大多立足于片面理解其“少数人文化”论,给利维斯扣上“文化精英主义”的帽子。然而,对利维斯“少数人文化”的理解必须结合利维斯对“大众文明”的界定和批判,更不能忽视利维斯对“心智成熟的民众”的关注和想象。利维斯批判的“大众文明”是工业技术发展带来的批量生产的文化后果,他所批判的“大众文化”并非指人民群众创造的民间文化,而是指商业利益驱动的现代传媒对大众的操纵、欺骗和误导。他清醒地意识到,解决“大众文明”时代的“文化困境”,光靠“少数人”的突围是不够的,而得到“心智成熟的民众”的回应和支持,文化传承才有希望;因此,大学教育的各门学科都应该以培养“心智成熟的民众”为使命,文学研究尤应如此。“少数人”与“心智成熟的民众”之间的创造性合作就是利维斯对“共同体”的想象。     

From Restored Past to Unsettled Present: New Challenges for Jewish Museums in East Central Europe

This article examines the institutional development of Jewish museums in Prague, Budapest, and Bratislava from 1989 to the present, with special reference to their role as agents of cultural memory. I consider how these museums contribute to the formation of Jewish identities in post-communist societies, which are themselves struggling to form collective identities. After analyzing the institutional structures and exhibition concepts of these museums in relation to shifts in the politics of representation, I propose a core area on which each museum could base its future development.     

Strategic Intersectionality and Political Representation: Female Muslim Councilors in London

This article addresses questions of how race/ethnicity, gender, and religion influence political representation. We use original interview data to test a strategic intersectionality theory developed by Fraga and colleagues (2005) in the case of female Muslim councilors in London, the United Kingdom. The original strategic intersectionality theory proposes that women are more effective advocates for ethnic group interests due to their unique capacity to leverage three primary resources: a substantive policy focus, multiple identity advantage, and gender inclusive advantage. We modify the thesis by analyzing religion as an additional identity marker and further disaggregating the three primary sources of leverage. We use the modified thesis to test whether female Muslim councilors of three London boroughs are more effective advocates for Muslim interests than their non-Muslim colleagues. We find mixed evidence for the presence of the three sources of leverage associated with strategic intersectionality, resulting in a more complex theorizing of this phenomenon than that found in prior research. This study offers a new contribution to the operationalization of intersectionality and the literature on intersectionality and political representation.
