(Un)ethical practices: intimacy and Internet in the media coverage of the Ashley Madison hack

In the summer of 2015, the “cheating website” known as Ashley Madison came under scrutiny, as a group calling itself the Impact Team revealed users’ private information. This case study explores the controversy’s Canadian media coverage and sheds light on the main discourses about intimacy and the Internet that were made visible during this event. It interrogates how cheaters, hackers, and the company were represented. To varying degrees, the mainstream press condemns the cheaters, the hackers, and the company for their behaviour. The article also addresses the ways intimate practices are politicized and commercialized in the digital context, including a discussion of the emphasis on “privacy.” To conclude the article, I discuss the transparency and privacy issues implicated in digital intimacies and the power–knowledge (im)balance implied by hackers’ online anonymity.     

Curating the Soul: Foucault's concept of hupomnemata and the digital technology of self-care

This paper explores how online actions such as the practice of digital self-writing shape our offline identity. We start with an examination of the concept of hupomnemata – a practice of self-writing in which notes are kept as a ‘material record of things read, heard, or thought’ in the intent of shaping the self [Foucault (1997). Self writing. In P. Rabinow (Ed.), Ethics, subjectivity and truth. The essential works of Foucault, 1954–1984. Volume 1 (pp. 207–222). New York, NY: The New Press p. 209] – before arguing that the practice of digital content curation can be understood as a modern-day variant of the Greco-Roman hupomnemata. Although the work of the digital curator is conducted online, this paper positions contemporary curatorial practices as acts of self-exploration, self-cultivation, and self-care, which nourish offline identity and which ultimately work to shape the offline, corporeal self.     

Information society and digital divide in South Africa: results of longitudinal surveys

Integration into the information society implies that information plays an increasingly important role in all sectors of society and holds distinct social and economic benefits. Discourses on the information society are, however, also associated with the digital divide and inequalities in access to and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Within sub-Saharan Africa, South Africa is often regarded as one of the most information-integrated societies due to widespread mobile phone ownership, among other things. However, while ICT access has been emphasized, research also points to the role of demographic, socio-economic and cultural factors such as ethnicity, income, education and gender. This article discusses the results of questionnaire surveys conducted by Afrobarometer among probability South African samples in 2008 and 2011. The results indicate that individual Internet use and mobile Internet access were lower than estimated in the literature. Furthermore, gender gaps, as well as considerable gaps between population groups and educational levels, were found in Internet and computer use, mobile ownership and access to mobile Internet and accessing news via the Internet. Conclusions regarding strategies for bridging the digital divide and integrating South Africa into the information society are discussed.     

In search of African history: the re-appropriation of photographic archives by contemporary visual artists

The digital revolution has fundamentally changed our relationship to archives, by accelerating their “dusting off” and their re-appropriation, particularly in the art world. This article will show the ways in which some contemporary visual artists use new digital technologies to provide new ways of storing, reading and retrieving contemporary African history. Such artists do so by revisiting diverse forms of archives that are mainly photographic, and which were produced during the colonial and independence eras.     

论科学证据的两种概率解释

在科学证据研究中,存在＂正相关＂和＂高概率＂两种科学证据的概率定义。从这两个定义出发,能够比较清晰直观地解释科学证据的许多相关问题,如科学证据中的＂比较级＂和＂可接受性＂等。然而,两个定义自身存在着不可忽视的缺陷：＂正相关＂不是证据的充要条件,＂高概率＂也不足以使证据之为证据。     

‘Back to our Roots?’ Re-visiting psychoanalytically-informed baby and young child observation in the education of student social workers

While there is a well-established literature on psychoanalytically-informed baby and young child observation in social work education, little has been published recently. This paper reviews the rationale for its use, evaluating its impact on students’ learning in the light of contemporary policy and practice contexts facing social work education. Analysis of feedback gained from a recent cohort, identifies three ways in which learning through baby and young child observation contributes: firstly, students encounter and learn about the complexity of child development from the direct experience of observing and secondly, observing facilitates the development of important skills for practice; students’ ‘use of self’. Thirdly, through observing, students describe how they develop the capacity to take-up and sustain a professional role. Well-structured teaching and learning through observation is therefore shown to provide a rigorous, theoretically-grounded contribution to the training of university-based social work students entering this complex and challenging professional field.     

CO-OFDM系统中基于线性预处理的新相位噪声抑制算法

针对相干光正交频分复用（coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing,CO-OFDM）系统中相位噪声引起的载波间干扰（inter-carrier interference,ICI）问题,提出了一种基于线性预处理的新判决反馈相位噪声抑制算法。该新算法改进了线性预处理部分,利用循环前缀与OFDM符号固有的相关性,在时域进行简单的线性组合运算,充分利用了OFDM符号中冗余信息。仿真分析表明,在激光器线宽为200 kHz且误码率（bit error rate, BER）为10－4时,与判决反馈相位噪声抑制算法和一次迭代的判决反馈相位噪声抑制算法相比,该新算法BER曲线的信噪比（signal to noise ratio,SNR）分别改善了3 dB和1 dB,有效地降低由ICI引起的错误平层。     

关于我国刑事诉讼贯彻直接言词原则的思考

直接言词原则是现代刑事诉讼基本原则之一,它在许多国家刑事诉讼实践中得到了贯彻。虽然我国刑事诉讼法及有关司法解释的一些规定也体现了直接言词原则的精神,但由于立法上、司法实践上存在贯彻执行这一原则的障碍,使得这一原则在我国刑事诉讼中成了一种摆设。因而,在我国要贯彻直接言词原则,必须建立证人等出庭的制度,限制书面言词证据的使用,进一步加强庭审方式的改革,强化庭审的功能。从剖析我国贯彻这一原则的障碍入手,提出了在我国贯彻直接言词原则的设想。
