In Praise of Community Organizers

Community organizing was an issue of discussion during the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign. Rather than celebrate its rich history of advocating for labor reform and community revitalization, noted opponents of former community organizer Barack Obama, including Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, decided to make grassroots community organizing the target of their ridicule and scorn. Given group work's close association with community organizing, in this article in the Social Work with Groups journal, the author aims to set the record straight.     

Defining Volunteering for Community Campaigns: An Exploration of Race,Self Perceptions,and Campaign Practices

A substantial percentage of volunteer needs are met by a relatively small percentage of individuals. Community volunteer organizations may address these shortages by recruiting volunteers using media campaigns. However, problems occur when perceptions of volunteering differ between volunteers and the organization, with race emerging as a key factor in shaping these perceptions. This article addresses such a gap in perceptions by using focus group data to consider the extent to which African American male volunteers' perceptions and actions align with those of a major US volunteer organization. Our results provide insights on how groups can more successfully reach out to potential volunteers by recognizing and overcoming perceptual and actual differences regarding volunteerism.     

Marching Against the Dictator: Chernobyl Path in Belarus

The protest campaign Chernobyl Path is held annually in Belarus to commemorate victims of the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, raise public awareness of environmental issues, and call for democratization in the post-communist state. The size of this protest event, however, has declined since the mid-1990s. This Profile argues that protest tactics and state countermoves account for a low level of citizen participation in the protest event. The empirical analysis focuses on the protest campaign held in the capital city of Minsk in spring 2013. The present analysis examines tactics deployed by regime opponents and state authorities during this protest campaign. The study illustrates how civic activists in an authoritarian regime seek to put environmental issues on the public agenda.     

毛泽东为什么要发动反右派运动

认真研读进入社会主义时期后的毛泽东一系列重要文稿,便不难发现,在观察和思考国内社会的阶级关系、少数人闹事原因、民主党派和知识分子队伍状况以及国内思想动向等诸多社会问题时,毛泽东偏重于运用阶级斗争的观点,从而导致将国内形势看得过于严重。这就使得毛泽东对整风鸣放阶段中出现的激烈批评言论不仅不能正确对待,反而作出发动反右派运动的决策。可以说,决策发动反右派运动是毛泽东思想深处中存在的"以阶级斗争为纲"的"左"的指导思想在1957年6月这一特定历史条件下的运用与实践。     

马克思论英中鸦片贸易

马克思对中国问题的论述可以说都是围绕鸦片贸易展开的。马克思对鸦片贸易、鸦片战争、不平等条约三者问的内在联系作了具体深刻阐述,他认为,鸦片贸易是相对于一般商品的"合法贸易"而言的,是人类历史上一个独特的现象;鸦片贸易给中国带来了全方位的痛苦和灾难,给英国创造了高额利润,最终导致鸦片战争;英国为了将鸦片贸易置于安全、稳固和永久的基础上,战后迫使中国签订了不平等条约。无疑鸦片贸易对中、英两国的影响都是双重的。     

对“严打”中有关问题的反思及其应对措施

"严打",作为在特定时期打击严重刑事犯罪的重要方针,对打击犯罪、保护人民、维护社会稳定发挥了重要作用.但在实践中,无论是认识上,还是行动上都暴露出了一些问题.针对这些问题,笔者提出了相应的改进措施.

跨入新世纪以来,由于英语等世界通用语在中国的普遍运用,汉语的使用受到冲击,一些文人学者开始倡导"保卫汉语".然而,语言的发展与演变有其自身的规律,人为地去"保卫"只会使汉语更加封闭.只有不断借鉴外来文化,才能促进汉语自身的发展进步.     

非基督教运动中的"非基督教周"活动述论——以广东省为聚焦点

1922～1927年,我国爆发了一场反对基督教的运动,史称"非基督教运动"。1924年底,上海非基督教同盟倡议,各地的非基督教组织应于每年的圣诞节前后一个星期(12月22～28日)发起"非基督教周"活动,以示威、演讲、散发传单和小册子等形式宣传反基督教,这一倡议得到全国各地的响应。"非基督教周"活动实际上成为非基督教运动得以开展的主要平台,使得非基督教运动每年至少有一次和一周以上时间的保证。     

建国初期甘肃省禁烟肃毒运动述评

建国初期,中共甘肃省委和省人民政府为巩固新生的人民政权,稳定社会秩序,厉行禁烟肃毒,结合甘肃开展的各项民主改革和社会改造,组织和领导全省各地开展了广泛、深入、持久的群众性的禁烟肃毒运动,使甘肃泛滥多年的烟毒彻底禁除。建国初期甘肃省的禁烟肃毒运动,有其显著的特点和丰富的经验,不仅为开展大规模的社会主义建设创造了条件,也对于目前严厉打击毒品犯罪活动的斗争有着重要的借鉴作用和参考价值。     

The role of public relations in a counterhegemony: A case study of the 1968 poor people’s campaign

This study examined the role of public relations in Antonio Gramsci’s concept of cultural hegemony, specifically in a counterhegemony. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s preparation for the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign serves as a test case on how public relations can help subordinate groups confront a hegemony. This paper suggests that Gramsci’s philosophy provides an analytical heuristic for researching instances of contestation. Examining counterhegemonic campaigns offer public relations practitioners a means both to think about and to intervene in the world more effectively.
