Marriage Expectations Among African American Couples in Early Adulthood: A Dyadic Analysis

Using Family and Community Health Study data consisting of 168 unmarried, primarily African American couples, the current study sought to understand the dyadic interplay among school, work, and partner-specific marriage expectations in early adulthood. Drawing on the economic prospects, adult transitions, and work - family literatures, the authors hypothesized and found ample support that expectations to marry a romantic partner were linked not only to one's own school and work-related experiences but also to those of a partner. These associations held while controlling for relationship satisfaction, general views of marriage, and other covariates that have been posited to explain racial inequalities in relationship and marriage patterns. Furthermore, the authors found that actor covariates of marital expectations differed from partner covariates, a finding that highlights the advantages of dyadic analyses in helping researchers understand marriage as both a developmental and interpersonal process.

The scale-up finance gap in the EU: Causes,consequences, and policy solutions

This paper assesses the financing gap faced by innovative start-ups in the European Union (EU) when they reach the scaling-up stage of their development. It draws on data collected through a seminar involving 117 experts representing start-ups and scale-ups, financial actors, academia, and EU policymakers and aimed at investigating the causes, consequences, and policy solutions of the scale-up gap in the EU. Besides highlighting supply-side deficiencies, the seminar also emphasised weaknesses in both the demand side of the scale-up gap and the EU ecosystem for high-growth entrepreneurship. The paper offers policy recommendations, highlighting the need for policy solutions involving private actors and specifically targeting scale-ups. The paper also calls for more robust research on measuring the scale-up financing gap and its economic impact to improve the policy response.

Older Adults Developing a Preference for Living Apart Together

What is understood about late life partner relationships is largely based on long‐term marriage, with little attention given to understanding the process of forming new partnerships in older adulthood. However, marked growth in cohabitation and greater awareness of living apart together (LAT) suggests a need for further investigation. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore how decisions about LAT are made among later‐life men and women. Twenty‐five participants completed life history calendars and semistructured interviews that examined how their current relationships evolved into LAT. Seven contributing factors were identified: relational and personal goals, age, caregiver burden, partner factors, relationship histories, and shifts in social mores. What participants were “doing” during the process of deciding to live apart together was working to resolve their long‐held and often ingrained beliefs about romantic relationships. Three preferences for LAT emerged from this study: opposing, ambivalent, and advocating. Future directions for research are discussed.
