高等教育的产品属性及政府角色的转化

关于高等教育的产品属性问题,一直是经济界和教育界最头疼问题。目前,对高等教育的产品属性的论断主要有两种:一种是高等教育是公共产品,另一种是高等教育是俱乐部产品。本文从公共产品的特性以及公共产品的外部效应着手,对上述两种观点进行了剖析,并进而提出了作者观点:高等教育是私人产品。在对高等教育的重新界定的基础上,进而论述了政府在高等教育中角色和地位的转变。     

论大学生思想政治教育的目标定位

大学生思想政治教育必须有正确的目标定位,没有目标定位或目标定位不正确必然导致工作的盲目性。高校育人目标虽然是大学生思想政治教育的根本目标或最终目标,但不是大学生思想政治教育的直接目标或具体目标。明确大学生思想政治教育的目标,结合学校实际和大学生思想实际对大学生思想政治教育进行正确的目标定位,是有计划、有针对性地开展大学生思想政治教育,提高大学生思想政治教育成效的基础。     

Symbolic Compliance and Student Concerns: Legal Endogeneity and Title IX at American Colleges and Universities

This article considers how American colleges and universities responded to rapid legal change around Title IX immediately following the 2011 release of the Office for Civil Rights’ Dear Colleague Letter. By analyzing the content of 250 campus sexual harassment policies, this article finds that contrary to the predictions of the employment discrimination literature, which suggests that the largest, most visible institutions in a field are the most likely to embed markers of symbolic compliance in their formal policies, small baccalaureate colleges are more likely to include references to the law in their formal documents than their research university peers do. To understand this intriguing finding, the article then analyzes 15 interviews with campus administrators at research universities and baccalaureate colleges to uncover the distinct logics of symbolic compliance and student concerns that differentially inform how actors at different kinds of institutions inhabit their roles and endogenously interpret new Title IX regulations in their formal policies and campus practices. In doing so, this article illuminates the ways in which processes of legal endogeneity differ across institution types within the broader field of higher education.     

重塑学生自信心的情感教学法初探

现代教育培养的人才应具有健全的人格、较强的创新精神和实践能力,善于协作和敢于竞争.然而,目前高校中有相当一部分学生因为学习成绩差等原因而丧失自信心,陷入不良情感的心理障碍中不能自拔.基于人本主义学习理论的情感教学法注重教学过程中的师生互动和情感交流,能够有效地促使学生重塑自信心,恢复积极向上的健康心态.情感教学法可从五个环节来实施:(1)简介课程的概况,确立课程的学习目标,对学生进行积极的鼓励;(2)调查学生的情况,将学生进行合理分组;(3)在教学过程中将课程知识传授、能力培养与信心培养相结合;(4)实行阶段考察,鼓励学生进一步学习;(5)课程结束时对"差生"实施积极的补救措施.     

长三角地区农民资金互助合作社运行满意度及影响因素分析 ——以泰州市苏陈资金互助合作社为例

农民资金互助合作社是目前准新型农村金融机构在长三角地区的典型代表。基于对江苏省泰州市苏陈资金互助合作社的实地调研,重点考察社员对样本农民资金互助合作社运行的满意度及影响因素。研究发现：样本社社员对于农民资金互助合作社的整体运行情况基本持肯定态度;社员的家庭总收入、政府对农民资金互助合作社的支持力度以及社员在农民资金互助合作社借用的互助金额度,是影响社员对于农民资金互助合作社满意度的主要因素;农民资金互助合作社融资业务的开展,对于社员的农业和二三产业经营均具有正向促进作用;农民资金互助合作社的互助金投放的覆盖面与农村信用合作社等传统农村正规金融机构形成了互补关系。在此基础上,提出了相关政策建议。     

A misspecification test for the higher order co-moments of the factor model

The traditional estimation of higher order co-moments of non-normal random variables by the sample analog of the expectation faces a curse of dimensionality, as the number of parameters increases steeply when the dimension increases. Imposing a factor structure on the process solves this problem; however, it leads to the challenging task of selecting an appropriate factor model. This paper contributes by proposing a test that exploits the following feature: when the factor model is correctly specified, the higher order co-moments of the unexplained return variation are sparse. It recommends a general to specific approach for selecting the factor model by choosing the most parsimonious specification for which the sparsity assumption is satisfied. This approach uses a Wald or Gumbel test statistic for testing the joint statistical significance of the co-moments that are zero when the factor model is correctly specified. The asymptotic distribution of the test is derived. An extensive simulation study confirms the good finite sample properties of the approach. This paper illustrates the practical usefulness of factor selection on daily returns of random subsets of S&P 100 constituents.     

Let the right one in: A Bourdieusian analysis of gender inequality in universities’ senior management

This article examines the lack of gender diversity in senior management positions in professional staff in universities. These results are analysed via a Bourdieusian analysis of economic, social, cultural and symbolic capital. Through a purposeful sample of senior professional staff working in universities in three countries: Australia, Canada and the UK, six career‐enhancing strategies needed for career success were determined. The article critiques the resource‐based view of career capital and argues that capitals accumulation for career success can be understood by considering the concepts of symbolic violence and habitus as a way of understanding intra‐cohort differences. It proposes that by considering both the subjective and objective cultural constructs via habitus, and by acknowledging the importance of symbolic capital and symbolic violence towards women, this may be one way of increasing female representation in senior management.     

Data falsification and question on academic integrity

In this commentary, we argue that plagiarism is not a new problem in academic publishing and data falsification in recent times has received a great attention globally. Due to lack of literature, the objective of this study is to evaluate data falsification and academic integrity. Accordingly, the study presents the academic misconduct (Falsification/Fabrication of data and Concerns/Issues About Data) case of Professor James E. Hunton, a former top ranked accounting professor from Bentley University. The study shows how research fraud/data falsification activity in the academic world lacks honesty and morality. The study offers some recommendations for the detection of plagiarism and academic misconduct. In the age of the Internet and digital era, Crossref, iThenticate, the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) would help to detect plagiarism. However, the question remains on detecting data falsification in the academic world.     

Identifying Systemically Important Banks: A temporal approach for macroprudential policies

Contrary to the general belief, systemic risk does not only regard the risk posed by balance sheet relationships and interdependencies among institutions. It also features a temporal dimension related to the inappropriate responses of financial market participants to changes in risk over time. This paper proposes a method to simultaneously address the cross-sectional and the time dimension in which systemic risk materializes. The method is based on the TOPHITS algorithm. It provides three scores, namely borrowing, lending and time scores: the first two represent the systemic importance of the borrowing and the lending activity associated with each financial institution,while the third represents an empirical Early Warning Signal of the financial crisis. Our findings reveal that the identification of the time score as an indicator for an incoming market distress could be relevant to design macro prudential policies.     

Coping with racial battle fatigue: differences and similarities for African American and Mexican American college students

Student of Color often reference racial microaggressions when asked to describe their post-secondary experience. The racial battle fatigue framework assists in understanding the cumulative, negative effect of racial microaggressions on psychological, behavioral, and physiological outcomes. This paper assesses the racial battle fatigue framework for African American and Mexican American college students and the impact of coping on racial stress. Results demonstrate that racial microaggressions negatively impact stress responses for African American and Mexican Americans differently, but coping may help alleviate the impact of racial battle fatigue. Universities can address racial microaggressions and negative health outcomes by educating campus constituents about racial microaggressions, addressing Whiteness, and providing education about adaptive coping strategies.
