A novel auto-regressive fractionally integrated moving average–least-squares support vector machine model for electricity spot prices prediction

In the framework of competitive electricity market, prices forecasting has become a real challenge for all market participants. However, forecasting is a rather complex task since electricity prices involve many features comparably with those in financial markets. Electricity markets are more unpredictable than other commodities referred to as extreme volatile. Therefore, the choice of the forecasting model has become even more important. In this paper, a new hybrid model is proposed. This model exploits the feature and strength of the auto-regressive fractionally integrated moving average model as well as least-squares support vector machine model. The expected prediction combination takes advantage of each model's strength or unique capability. The proposed model is examined by using data from the Nordpool electricity market. Empirical results showed that the proposed method has the best prediction accuracy compared to other methods.     

Race relations and racism in the LGBTQ community of Toronto: perceptions of gay and queer social service providers of color

This article explores race relations and racism within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community of Toronto, Ontario, from the perspective of seven gay/queer social service providers of color. Social constructions of race, race relations, and racism were placed at the centre of analysis. Employing interpretive phenomenological analysis, findings indicated that intergroup and broader systemic racism infiltrates the LGBTQ community, rendering invisible the lived experiences of many LGBTQ people of color. The study contributes to a growing body of research concerning our understanding of factors underpinning social discrimination in a contemporary Canadian LGBTQ context.     

On exact confidence intervals in a competing risks model with generalized hybrid type-I censored exponential data

In a recent paper by Mao, Shi and Sun that appeared in Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, the authors discuss, among other approaches, the construction of exact confidence intervals for the underlying parameters by ‘pivoting the cumulative distribution functions’ of the corresponding maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs). The authors assume that this method is applicable without providing the appropriate justification. In this short note the two requirements for the applicability of this method are discussed, namely, the stochastic monotonicity of the MLEs and the existence of solutions to the equations defining the exact confidence interval's endpoints.     

Estimation of the extended Weibull parameters and acceleration factors in the step-stress accelerated life tests under an adaptive progressively hybrid censoring data

ABSTRACT

Based on the tampered failure rate model under the adaptive Type-II progressively hybrid censoring data, we discuss the maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters and acceleration factors in the general step-stress accelerated life tests in this paper. We also construct the exact and unique confidence interval for the extended Weibull shape parameter. In the numerical analysis, we describe the simulation procedures to obtain the adaptive Type-II progressively hybrid censoring data in the step-stress accelerated life tests and present an experimental data to illustrate the performance of the estimators.
