The Changing Pattern of Wage Returns to Education and its Implications

It is commonly believed that labour‐market returns to education are highest for the primary level of education and lower for subsequent levels. Recent evidence reviewed in this article suggests that the pattern is changing. The causes of such changes, and their implications for both education and labour‐market policy, are explored.     

Post-employment covenants in the United States: Legal framework and market behaviours

In response to fundamental market changes that are giving labour a much more central role in product market competition, employers often seek to extend their control over human capital beyond termination of the employment relationship. Although empirical studies are scarce, the use of restrictive post‐employment covenants is indeed believed to be widespread. But to what extent can employers lawfully restrict the freedom of their former employees? The author examines the criteria that courts in the United States have considered in balancing employers' legitimate economic interests against labour market efficiency and workers' post‐employment freedom and mobility.     

The Impact of Migration on the Gendering of Service Work: The Case of a West London Hotel

This article responds to a call from Kerfoot and Korczynski to investigate the gendering of service sector employment. As a characteristic of many post‐industrial economies in the global North is the growing significance of migrant workers, this article investigates the impact of migration for work on the gendering of service work. Taking the embodied and emotional labour of workers to be fundamental to service work, it describes how these are refracted and produced through migration. The article draws on 60 interviews with workers in a west London hotel who were born abroad and the human resources staff and managers who are responsible for the recruitment and promotion of the workforce. We argue that migration is an important process in the construction of the contemporary workforce in post‐industrial service economies and that migration status should be understood as intersecting with gender in the production of a gendered performance at work.

中青年劳动力进城务工引发了农村＂劳力荒＂,从而导致农民主体缺位,并严重影响了新农村建设进程。在反思现状的基础上进一步分析农民主体缺位的原因,阐释马克思实践主体性理论,探索农民主体复位的途径,具有十分重要的理论价值和现实意义。     

Fatherhood regimes and father involvement in France and the UK

This paper contrasts and compares the institutional framework for fatherhood and father involvement and the survey evidence relating to fathers’ contribution to childcare and domestic work in the two countries. It shows that while men's contribution to such activities appears to be increasing in both France and the UK, change is slow and father involvement does not necessarily seem to correlate directly either with patterns of female labour force participation or with the support offered by the institutional framework. The authors explore the theoretical frameworks most appropriate for explaining their findings and situate them primarily in terms of Pfau-Effinger's theorization of the gender arrangement (1998, 2002, 2004). The authors conclude that while change in father involvement is slow, the introduction of statutory and organizational work–life balance measures which alter the gender order open up opportunities for negotiated change in the division of the labour in the home.     

湿地自然保护区生态需水供水成本补偿机制探讨--以黑龙江省扎龙湿地为例

作为亚洲最大湿地之一的扎龙湿地自然保护区近年来连续发生干旱和火灾,为维护生态系统平衡并对自然环境进行修复,必须人工补水以解决生态需水短缺问题。但人工补水需要巨大的成本,如何形成一个良性的长效补水机制是问题的关键。文章针对这一问题从资源环境经济、生态经济及灾害经济角度进行探讨,提出了建立生态需水供水成本的补偿机制的基本思路。
