Cultural sociology has recently developed new tools with which to understand and analyze meaning in terms of cultural discourse.
Specifically, this paper further develops the Alexanderian form of discourse analysis through application on the micro-level.
Utilizing extensive ethnographic data, the mythopoetic men's movement is examined in terms of how its participants construct
political meaning that motivates and guides their action. In empirical detail, these actors can be seen as creating a cultural
discourse that constitutes the social movement at a fundamental level while at the same time the discourse is continually
negotiated, contested, and reconfigured. Exposed is the “discourse of liberational masculinity” which is used by movement
participants to challenge and confront hegemonic masculinity in American society. Examining the mythopoetic men's movement
from this perspective demonstrates the analytic utility of this approach through revealing in unique ways the dynamics of
morality, political belief, and perceived hegemony within this popular contemporary social movement. 相似文献

This article responds to the special issue of Qualitative Sociology devoted to the author's book, Body and Soul: Notebooks of an Apprentice Boxer (vol. 28, no. 3, summer 2005). Four themes are tackled: the positioning of the inquirer and the question of social acceptance
and membership; the dynamics of embodiment(s) and the variable role of race as a structural, interactional, and dispositional
property; the functioning of the boxing gym as miniature civilizing and masculinizing machine; apprenticeship as a mode of
knowledge transmissioin and technique for social inquiry, the scope of carnal sociology, and the textual work needed to convey
the full-color texture and allure of the social world. This leads to clarifying the conceptual, empirical, and rhetorical
makeup of Body and Soul in relation to its triple intent: to elucidate the workings of a sociocultural competency residing in prediscursive capacities;
to deploy and develop the concept of habitus as operant philosophy of action and methodological guide; and to offer a brief
for a sociology not of the body (as social product) but from the body (as social spring and vector of knowledge), exemplifying a way of doing and writing ethnography that takes full
epistemic advantage of the visceral nature of social life.

For those homeless people who are rejecting traditional social services, one may have to be able to treat their symptoms as secondary while looking beyond them for primary social patterns. This reveals a lifestyle devastated by disaffiliation and social distance. People who have been homeless for a long time can be shown to be suffering from a lifestyle of homelessness or from homelessness-as-a-lifestyle. This is a condition, the components of which often include early life transiency, impulsiveness, clusters of unsolved problems, as well as a lack of social and other supports. These lifestyle elements interact with one another in perpetuating fashion, dragging the person along in an undertow, one result of which is downward mobility. The ideas and reputational history of German psychoanalyst and sociologist Erich Fromm are examined as a case study in the sociology of knowledge that explores how intellectual boundaries are constructed within and between disciplines in the modem academy, psychoanalytic institutes, and the journal and book reading publics and among the intellectual elite. The rise and fall of Erich Fromm is narrated using the foil of Michèle Lament's analysis of how Derrida became a dominant philosopher and influence on literary criticism. The example of how Fromm became a forgotten intellectual is used to examine various models of how reputations are constructed. My analysis highlights the importance of the sectlike culture of psychoanalysis and Marxism as well as the boundary-maintaining processes of academic disciplines, schools of thought, and intellectual traditions, and suggests a research agenda on orthodoxies and revisionism within intellectual movements more generally. 相似文献

知识社会学"视角"理论的主要观点认为,视角是由人的社会环境和生活状况决定的,各种思想差异都可以归结为视角差异,而视角差异又可以归结为群体归属的差异;视角意味着思想具有片面性,视角的综合使认识越来越客观,视角的扩大有助于克服认识过程的片面性。这些观点启示我们,在社会主义核心价值观教育中,高校教师应把握学生的不同视角,根据学生视角的不同进行分类教育,并意识到自身视角的局限性,在把握视角差异基础上打破沟通障碍。 相似文献

The experiences of children who live with parental mental illness are becoming increasingly recognized. However, there remains a limited body of knowledge in relation to an individual's longer term experiences. This study sought adult children's experiences of childhood parental mental illness. It generated reflections of 13 adult children who had lived with parents with mental illness during their childhood. The narrative design of the study facilitated a voice for participants. The paper presents one main theme of the findings. The findings offer a unique insight into childhood awareness of social stigmas and children's behavioural changes to avoid disclosure of parental mental illness. Participants noted that they were aware of social stigmas associated with mental illness during their childhood. This contributed to their fear of disclosure to others that fuelled a culture of familial secrecy, reinforcing the children's own sense of difference. Further work is required to enhance community understanding about the familial journeys of parental mental illness and the impact of negative‐natured stigmas. 相似文献

All forms of humanism that consider the human as a yardstick of society are marginalized by a Digital Technological Matrix that dominates the human, minimizes its role, and transforms it, to the point of dissolving its boundaries with the non‐human. Speaking of essence and human dignity still make sense? The thesis of this contribution is that the human is redefined and re‐evaluated precisely due to the process that makes the human ‘eccentric’ and places it in the system environment. The human re‐emerges as an intransitive essence endowed with an original, humble, relational dignity. The human can and must be regenerated through the relational reflexivity operated by relational subjects contextually capable of re‐entering within themselves the constitutive distinctions of their humanness, both individual and collective. The specific ‘intransitive’ essence of the human lies in the impossibility for it to renounce the meaning of its own existence. Precisely because of the confrontation with robotic technologies, the value of the human being and his dignity change. 相似文献

The essay focuses on thinking about thinking about PR history. The space between history and sociology encompasses theoretical and conceptual frames and can be drawn upon to consider PR in time, across times and between times. It reflects upon the purposes and practices of historical sociology and foregrounds themes relevant to public relations, its histories and methodological approaches. The paper, which is methodological at the strategic rather than the technical level, argues that public relations historians can usefully engage with theoretical issues and problems delineated in historical sociology and historical theory.
