Since the term appeared in 2003, popular media and academics have been interested in the phenomenon of ‘opting out’ — elite women choosing to leave their jobs to stay at home with their children. Although it is unclear whether the opt‐out revolution actually exists, this conversation has resulted in a wealth of scholarship on women leaving successful jobs to care for their children, particularly how maternity might be a graceful time to exit gendered organizations. However, there is not scholarship considering women without children who opt out of the dominant career model. In this study, I look at three popular autobiographies of women who left successful careers to pursue alternative work (farming, baking). I found that the women sought meaning in their work, control over their labour process, and a new definition of success. These narratives provide broader insight into the constraints of the dominant career model and gendered organizations as well as the particular difficulties for non‐mothers to opt out.  相似文献

Many school districts across North America have turned to a framework for curriculum design and instruction called “Understanding by Design.” Included in the framework is a call for teachers to create “essential questions” that provocatively ask students to consider and learn the “big ideas and core processes within the content standards” (Tomlinson and McTighe 2006, 26). Essential questions guide teaching and engage students in uncovering the important ideas at the heart of a subject (Wiggins and McTighe 1998, 28). The conceptual foundation for this curricular approach and for this research is student-centered learning. Although essential questions are being widely used across content areas, a robust field of research specifically and concretely considering how exactly these questions are best employed does not exist, especially not for history courses. Through a mixed methods approach, this practical action research project determined that revisiting the same essential questions throughout the school year greatly increased students’ abilities to connect learning between units, but only slightly increased their abilities to connect learning to personal experiences outside the history classroom.  相似文献

This study investigated factors that influence the relationship between experiencing customer incivility and the psychological well-being of employees in the service industry (N?=?215). Using the cognitive appraisal theory of stress, we identified and tested three factors that may buffer employees from the negative effects of customer incivility: finding meaning in work, perspective taking, and transformational leadership of supervisors. Transformational leadership was found to moderate the relationship between customer incivility and employee well-being. Meaning and perspective taking did not moderate the relationship between customer incivility and employee well-being, but did have a positive association with employee well-being. These findings contribute to the literature on customer incivility and suggest that organization-based resources that influence both primary and secondary appraisal, such as transformational leadership, are useful in buffering the harmful employee outcomes related to customer incivility.  相似文献
