Acceptance of Global Positioning System (GPS) Technology Among Dementia Clients and Family Caregivers

The purpose of this study was to examine the acceptance of Global Positioning System (GPS) used to help people with dementia, who are at risk for wandering in their communities. We used a mixed methods research approach that included use logs, pre and post paper-based questionnaires, and focus groups. Forty-five client-caregiver pairs (dyads) were included to use one of the GPS devices for an average of 5.8 months over a 1-year period. GPS acceptance was high; dyads were likely to continue using the GPS. According to the participants, the GPS provided caregivers peace of mind and reduced anxiety in dyads when clients got lost.     

Accounting for clinical covariates and interactions in ranking genomic markers using ROC

In biomedical research, profiling is now commonly conducted, generating high-dimensional genomic measurements (without loss of generality, say genes). An important analysis objective is to rank genes according to their marginal associations with a disease outcome/phenotype. Clinical-covariates, including for example clinical risk factors and environmental exposures, usually exist and need to be properly accounted for. In this study, we propose conducting marginal ranking of genes using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) based method. This method can accommodate categorical, censored survival, and continuous outcome variables in a very similar manner. Unlike logistic-model-based methods, it does not make very specific assumptions on model, making it robust. In ranking genes, we account for both the main effects of clinical-covariates and their interactions with genes, and develop multiple diagnostic accuracy improvement measurements. Using simulation studies, we show that the proposed method is effective in that genes associated with or gene–covariate interactions associated with the outcome receive high rankings. In data analysis, we observe some differences between the rankings using the proposed method and the logistic-model-based method.

英汉指示词与时间名词的搭配及其语义认知研究

英汉时间指示语都可以通过指示词与时间名词组合而成。指示词与时间名词在组合使用时会有各自不同的搭配方式和指示信息。英语“this／these＋time noun”短语与汉语“影这些＋时间名词”短语在搭配习惯及词组语义上存在共性和差异,即意义相同的指示词都可以接纳时间名词组合成时间指示语,但后接具体名词并不能一一对应;二者在语义上存在模糊与精确之分,也有模糊度或精确度强弱之分。这些差异本质上源于中西思维模式的不同。对此短语进行语义认知研究有助于对指示词和时间名词的精确理解与使用,有利于跨文化交际、外语教学及翻译实践。     

启发式教学在本科课程教学中的应用——以《投资经济学》为例

启发式教学倡导以教师讲授为主导,以学生自主学习为主体,激发学生主动学习的兴趣,提高学生的自主学习能力。以《投资经济学》课程为例,启发式教学的课前、课中都需要精选专题、精心分组引导、精彩讨论、精确评价等运作过程。同时,教师的准确定位、对学生的充分了解以及重视课堂教学过程中的情感交流等也是启发式教学取得良好效果的保障。
