Engendering Response: Professional Gesture and the Assessment of Eyesight in Optometry Consultations

Many of the procedures undertaken within healthcare require specialized forms of participation that may be unfamiliar, even disturbing, to patients or clients. The practitioner has to encourage and enable participation in the investigation in an appropriate fashion while preserving the structure and integrity of the procedure. In this article, we consider optometry and the deployment of a vision test, known as subject refraction, that provides data to help determine the characteristics of any corrective lens that may be required by clients. The procedure's ability to establish robust and reliable data relies upon the optometrist's ability to encourage the client to respond to a series of stimuli without consideration or reflection. That is, the client is required to produce an unwitting response—conduct that might be considered nonsymbolic rather than symbolic. In this article, we also consider the optometrist's talk and bodily comportment during subjective refraction and how it serves to shape and determine the quality of the client's response and participation, and in turn to produce reliable test results.     

Size doesn't matter: The fallacy of class-differential fertility in social mobility analysis

One of the key methodological and conceptual constraints in social mobility analysis has been how to differentiate between the 'core' pattern connecting social origins and destinations, and the effect of different distributions of origins and destinations across nations and time points. Conventional sociological wisdom has held that class differentials in family size (and occupational change) impose a significant constraint on the marginal distributions in a mobility table. Due to the logic of the random sampling process, middle class fathers with smaller families are under-represented in mobility tables. It is therefore necessary to approach mobility via the randomly sampled social destinations, rather than as a process moving chronologically from origins to destinations. However, a re-working of the Nuffield Mobility Study data-set is used to show that class differentials in fertility have virtually no effect. The explanation of this surprising finding is shown to lie in class size and the actual distribution of large and small families. The finding implies that if occupational change is left as the only process modifying marginal distributions, it deserves greater attention.

在高校进行思想政治理论课精品课程建设，是进行课程质量工程建设的重要途径，提高课程教学实效性是根本目标。以此为价值尺度进行评价，可以得知，思想政治课精品课程建设已经取得了一定的成绩，但与此同时，也存在一些明显的问题需要引起重视。解决问题的关键在于处理好几个关系：“手段与目的”的关系、“文件与实践”的关系、“模式与特色”的关系、“阶段性与持续性”的关系。     

Participation and Emotions: Troubling Encounters Between Children and Social Welfare Professionals

This paper explores the emotional aspects of participation within social welfare contexts. The focus is on individual professionals, such as social workers and children’s rights workers and their articulation, management and negotiation of the emotional when working with children and young people. The institutions of welfare are also shown to be ambiguous in their approaches to participation. Lastly, the dimensions of power that are enacted in relations between professionals and children reveal some of the complex dynamics in this fraught area of social welfare policy and practice.     

Producing and Using Video Data in the Early Years: Ethical Questions and Practical Consequences in Research with Young Children

This article considers ethical questions and practical challenges arising from the production of video data with young children, and suggests that such considerations are reciprocal and that video data should be seen as constructed collaboratively by all participants. Video data can be a valuable means of eliciting children’s perspectives, but it raises particular issues of consent and confidentiality. Opportunities for young children to use video cameras are helpful in supporting informed consent and active participation, whilst the visual nature of video renders anonymity and confidentiality more difficult, and anonymisation of images may impact upon data quality. Video, like all research data, is influenced by the actions and biases of participants, and young children’s experiences as consumers of television will influence their reading of, and responses to, video data. An advantage of video is that it can provide participants with feedback about their participation. Challenges remain with regard to ownership.     

定向运动特色课程教学创新与实践研究

定向运动是利用自然环境开展活动的体育项目,它能使人们融入社会,回归大自然。采用文献资料法、问卷调查法、专家访谈法、数理统计法和综合分析法,对国内高校开展定向运动的情况进行回顾与分析,发现定向运动是一项适合在普通高校中大力开展的新兴体育项目。文章针对定向运动特性对该运动作了深化改革与创新,并就充分利用学校周边自然资源开展定向运动教学进行了有益的尝试,取得了良好的实践效果。     

包拯的法治思想与断案特色

包拯在从政过程中重视以法治国,维护法律的尊严,提出法存画一、赏德罚罪、防微杜渐、严惩赃吏等一系列针对时弊的法治思想。传世的包拯亲自处理的民刑案件并不多,但从中可见包拯司法实践中智慧、刚正、廉洁断案的特色。后来流传的包拯上百个断案故事,掺杂许多虚构、夸张或迷信的成分,不过在一定程度上也反映了这方面的特色。     

启蒙叙事传统中的中国女性文学

将中国女性文学纳入启蒙叙事传统中,通过启蒙思潮与女性文学的内在一致性、启蒙话语下女性文学的文本特征、启蒙对女性创作的启示三个方面,阐述女性文学的诞生与启蒙思潮的不解渊源、女性解放的主题与启蒙主题目标的高度一致、女性文学的两大高峰与启蒙的两大高峰相互应和、启蒙的先天不足造成女性创作的后天失调等现象和原因,指出在当下＂启蒙死了＂的哀悼声中,作为个人自由的启蒙精神将永存。启蒙思潮促生了现代意义的中国女性文学,而女性文学走向个性化又进一步深化了启蒙文化的意义,为启蒙提出了新课题。
