Dealing with dysnomia: Strategies for the cultivation of used concepts in social research

This article follows recent calls to turn social theory away from its fixations on intellectual history and toward the mechanics and craft of creating social theories in the research process. The subject of this article is a dilemma common to theorizing in social science: dysnomia, or the phenomenon in which some object is poorly named. Specifically, this article focuses on how social scientists distinguish original concepts from their equivalents in everyday speech. Three tactics for dealing with dysnomia are named—academic arcana, classification and sociologism—and considered in order to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses of each.     

The public relations paradox of erasure: Damnatio memoriae as public relations strategy and tactic

Public relations scholars study how organizations co-create meaning with engaged stakeholders. Not well understood is how and why such co-creation modifies shared meaning, amplifies change, and even “erases” some piece of memory from the public record with the purpose of redirecting and redefining societal narratives. To help establish erasure as a concept for studying public relations, we draw from Freud’s theory of memory to establish a foundation upon which to critique strategic erasure. We adapt Freud’s theory of memory into the intersecting critique of visual rhetoric as public relations by analyzing, via narrative inquiry, remnants of Imperial Rome that have been modified, amplified, but even erased to present Rome’s modern identity. For centuries, even during Imperial Rome, leaders practiced damnatio memoriae —a modern Latin phrase that means “condemnation of memory.” We use this concept to interrogate the public relations identity process Rome’s leaders have used to modify for emphasis and even obliterate Roman elites’ names and images from the texts of public records by destroying, mutilating and modifying statues and monuments as a means for co-creating new public memory. Such analysis reveals how damnatio memoriae helps elites to redefine the “memory” of the Eternal City.

女大学生作为同龄女性中的佼佼者,她们对爱情的不同体验、不同选择,不仅关系到其自身的发展与成才,更关系到校园文化的建设与社会风气的导向,甚至关系到中国未来社会的发展与稳定。文章以福州大学城某高校大一、大二、大三的三个年级各100名女生为调查对象,分了其恋爱观、婚育观。其恋爱观、婚育观理性、现实,趋于成熟;理想化的成份渐渐褪去。对当代女大学生的婚恋观进行理性思考是高校思想政治工作不容忽视的课题之一。

公民自主参选人大代表的兴起,一度引起社会各界的广泛关注,也在各方面影响到人大制度的选举过程和结果。然而,目前在研究区县级人大代表换届选举过程中出现的这一新兴群体时。许多研究还处于概念冲突的状态。可看到的相关概念群包括：“自荐候选人”、“非组织提名候选人”和“独立候选人”等概念,不仅引发学界和人大工作者的许多争议,而且给人大代表选举制度带来现实挑战。因而探讨自主参选人的兴起及其概念具有重要的理论和实践价值,这在很大程度上也将成为人大选举制度由“确认型”向“竞争型”演进中的重要标志。     

着力构建学习实践科学发展观的三大重要机制

着力构建学习实践科学发展观的动力机制、实践机制和监督考核机制对持续深入开展学习实践科学发展观活动具有重大的理论意义和实践价值。构建动力机制应该以符合科学发展理念的内在动力机制和体现科学发展目的的外在动力机制为基础,形成学习实践活动的强大推动力;构建实践机制应该以实现科学发展目标的开拓性实践机制和展示科学发展要义的跨越式实践机制为着眼点,为学习实践活动提供发展的动力;构建监督考核机制应该以保障科学发展进程的制度化监督体系和检验科学发展成就的标准化考核体系为落脚点,使学习实践活动获得坚强的保障。     

论城市界面下回族女性婚姻观念和行为的变迁

目前,中国正在进行着一场深入的变革.在这场变革中强调的是观念和制度的调适,构建的是积极现代的人际互动模式.不可否认,现代化的冲击和裹挟给生活在城市中的回族女性带来了巨大的利益和信息.但是必须看到任何现代化的构建和前进都有诸多非现代化的制约因素.对于回族来说,这一承载着太多宗教与传统因素的民族.它的发展与进步也是在现代化的转型中进行着潜移默化的调适.笔者正是把对城市回族女性婚姻观念和行为的研究放置在这一大的时代背景之下,主要探讨回族女性在现代化背景下婚姻观念行为的调适与变迁.     

科学发展观的总体性要求和特征

马克思主义总体性思想和方法从社会总体性、实践总体性、方法总体性和人的总体性四个方面从整体上规定了科学发展观的要求和特征;科学发展观的总体性要求和特征又进一步丰富和发展了马克思主义的总体性思想和方法。二者在全面建设小康社会和实现社会主义现代化的过程中,共同服务于社会主义建设的总体布局,共同实现把中国特色社会主义建设成为一个经济富强、政治民主、文化繁荣、社会和谐和生态良好的系统目标。     

Using Concept Mapping to Develop a Statewide Kinship Care Coalition: A Case Study

Increasingly, community coalitions are being developed to address a myriad of social challenges. However, documented research efforts related to planning processes associated with coalition formation are few. This case-study documents the use of concept mapping (CM) to d elineate a conceptual framework for developing a statewide kinship care coalition in one southeastern state. CM is a mixed-method research approach that analyzes qualitative data via nonmetric multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analyses. After a review of relevant literature, this article discusses CM processes associated with this endeavor and examines implications for future use of CM for coalition formation and development.
