Young people negotiating and maintaining boundaries in youth work relationships: findings from an ethnographic study of youth clubs

‘Professional boundaries’ set limits on appropriate behaviours in the relationship between the service users and practitioners. The professional literature often assumes boundaries are maintained by the practitioners, occupational bodies, or organisational policy. However in youth work this is under-researched. An ethnographic study of four youth clubs in the North East of England into ethical practice revealed that young people were surprisingly adept at maintaining boundaries with the youth workers. These boundaries were negotiated and maintained through the young people's use of space, their willingness to interact with the workers, the way they shared information with the workers, and their inclusion of youth workers into their social networking. Young people also showed a sophisticated awareness of the organisational boundaries youth workers were operating within, and often cooperated in maintaining them with the worker. The article concludes by arguing youth workers should take seriously young people's ability and willingness to set and work within boundaries, and see their negotiation and maintenance as a mutual endeavour. However, this may provide a challenge to organisations with rigid policy-defined boundaries.     

Restoring Meaning to Supervision Through a Peer Consultation Group in Rural Australia

The establishment of a cross-discipline peer consultation group in regional Australia is described. A research project, which explored the impact of the peer consultation on participants, using pre-group and post-group evaluation surveys along with data from an externally facilitated group evaluation session is discussed. Key findings reveal the value of access to varied modes of supervision; the importance of supervision not feeling like being subjected to surveillance; and the contribution that positive experiences of peer consultation have for our participants' well-being. The potential for improved connection and mutual benefits for practice and academia in sponsorship of professional peer consultation by regional universities also emerges from this research. The effectiveness of contemporary workplace counselling supervision arrangements, and of what, precisely, the enjoyment of engaging in case discussions in peer consultation groups is constituted are areas for more exploration.     

育人为本理念下高校辅导员职业道德评价

"立德树人"是高校辅导员的育人理念,揭示了高校辅导员职业道德建设的重要性。目前我国高校尚未建立一套辅导员职业道德评价体系,这种状况必将导致辅导员道德的职能和作用发挥失常,进而会使师德失去意义并变成无生命力的东西。因此,构建辅导员的职业道德评价体系迫在眉睫,应该从树立育人为本的教育理念、把握正确的价值取向、运用多元化的评价方式、建立职业道德评价的考评激励制度、规范职业道德评价的网络准入机制、构建"双能型"职业道德评价模式、发挥校本文化的职业道德评价功能等方面来构建高校辅导员职业道德评价体系。     

SOME THOUGHTS ON THE RELEVANCE OF THE WORK OF D. W. WINNICOTT FOR PRESENT DAY SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE WITH ADULTS

The work of D. W. Winnicott is of topical relevance and value to current social work students who are learning to work with adult service users. Winnicott's theories and ideas on essential matters like reliability and proper listening are raised, together with issues of ambivalence, and some implications for inter‐professional practice. Winnicott is clear, accessible and meaningful in practice terms, which is what social work students crave.
