TESTS FOR SEASONAL DIFFERENCING WITH AN UNKNOWN BREAK-POINT

Some Lagrange multiplier tests for seasonal differencing are proposed; their main objective is to avoid over-differencing due to structural change. The null hypothesis is either the presence of both regular and seasonal unit roots or the presence of a seasonal unit root. Alternative hypotheses allow for stationarity around a possible structural change where the break-point is unknown. The location of the structural change is estimated using the proposed procedures, the asymptotic distribution of the test statistics under the null hypothesis is derived and some useful percentiles are tabulated. An illustrative example based on the Canadian Consumer Price Index is presented.

Heteroscedasticity-robust estimation of autocorrelation

This paper proposes estimators of the first-order autocorrelation that are based on suitably transformed ratios of successive observations. The new estimators are given by simple functions of the observations. Numerical optimization is not required. Simulations show that they are highly robust against extreme values and clusters of high volatility and are therefore particularly useful for the estimation of serial correlation in return series. Besides, the results of the simulation study also call into question the common practice of correcting the small-sample bias of conventional estimators.

In this note, we restudy a by-claim risk model with general dependence structures between each main claim and its by-claim. Within the framework of regular variation, we derive some asymptotic expansions for the infinite-time and finite-time ruin probabilities.
