Statistical Analysis of Linear Degradation and Failure Time Data with Multiple Failure Modes

The paper considers linear degradation and failure time models with multiple failure modes. Dependence of traumatic failure intensities on the degradation level are included into the models. Estimators of traumatic event cumulative intensities, and of various reliability characteristics are proposed. Prediction of residual reliability characteristics given a degradation value at a given moment is discussed. Non-parametric, semiparametric and parametric estimation methods are given. Theorems on simultaneous asymptotic distribution of random functions characterising degradation and intensities of traumatic events are proposed. Asymptotic properties of unconditional and residual reliability characteristics estimators are given. Real tire wear and failure time data are analysed.     

Using Thin Slices for Behavioral Coding

This study investigated whether brief segments of nonverbal behavior or “thin slices” would be representative of behavior across a longer interaction. It was hypothesized that behavioral slices would correlate with behavior across a full 15-minute interaction. Five commonly investigated nonverbal behaviors were coded: gazing, gestures, nods, smiles, and self-touch. The findings showed moderate to high positive correlations between the thin slices (1-minute slice, total of two 1-minute slices, total of three 1-minute slices) and the full interaction for all five behaviors. In regards to behavioral coding, the thin-slice methodology proposed could save nonverbal researchers considerable time, energy, and money by decreasing resources dedicated to coding behavior in some types of interactions. Lightning detection in British Columbia: An example of using system operation at unknown reliability to estimate component reliability

Lightning data collected over three dry seasons from the detection system operated by the British Columbia Ministry of Forests were analyzed to estimate the distribution of lightning signal strength and component detection efficiencies. The analysis was based on more than 165,000 lightning-strike records, where component detectors served both as lightning finders and as data collectors for evaluating the performance of other component detectors in the network. In spite of the unusual feature of this application involving a system evaluating itself, much was revealed to identify weaknesses and suggest improvements. A postanalysis system-modification update is included.
