Informal social supports have been consistently associated with the physical and mental well-being of the elderly. In this study the associations between sense of strain and three types of social support are described for a sample of 131 spouse caregivers. Adverse social contacts were associated with increased strain, while positive contacts were insignificant. When sources of social support were examined daughters figured prominently, as important sources of both positive and adverse social contacts. Findings also emphasize the importance of interventions which include friends, neighbors, and others. 相似文献

This study explored the use of generic medicines among elders in Belgium. The generic market share by volume for elders in 2010 was 23.1%, while this was 23.7% for the total Belgian population in 2009. Pharmaceutical expenditure in Belgium was €649.74 per capita for elders in 2010. Calculations of possible savings through an increased use of generic medicines showed that these savings were rather limited (4.48% when the generic market share by volume increased to 95%). The full potential of generic medicines in the elder population has not yet been realized in Belgium, due to the limited use of generic medicines and their relatively high prices. The Belgian government should implement additional incentives for physicians, pharmacists, and patients to increase the use of generics and combine these with policies to lower prices of generic medicines and policies to decrease the volume of medicines used by elders and rationalize the prescribing of medicines for elders. 相似文献

Summary Asian American elderly form a heterogeneous group with respect to immigration history, ethnic/cultural background, socioeconomic position, and health and mental health status. This paper provides an overview of the internal heterogeneity within the Asian American elderly population and identifies those who experience multiple stressors affecting their quality of life. Then it discusses barriers to formal service utilization as well as strengths and deficits of informal support systems. To better serve Asian American elders with their multiple needs for health, mental health, and social services, increased funding is recommended for research on this group, diversification of social service programs in coethnic communities, and increased cultural competence in non-Asian social service agencies. 相似文献

SUMMARY This article discusses the biopsychosocial and spiritual aspects related to older Latinos' use of mental health care. It also addresses the environment that older Latinos have to navigate to access mental health services. Structural barriers to mental health services are emphasized as critical to a holistic assessment of the client's situation. 相似文献

ABSTRACT In a systematic sample of Florida-licensed clinical social workers (N = 273), this study investigated the correlates of perceived adequacy to work with elders with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. Five predictor variables were identified from a standard regression analysis that account for 35.7% of the model's adjusted variance: (a) employment with elders (Beta = .225, p = .000), (b) years of experience (Beta = -.125, p = .018), (c) attitude toward working with elders with Alzheimer's disease (Beta = .351, p = .000), (d) perceived sufficiency of professional education to work with elders with Alzheimer's disease (Beta = .178, p = .002), and (e) attitude toward the delivery of nonclinical services to elders with Alzheimer's disease (Beta = .192, p = .000). Overall, respondents perceived their abilities to work with elders as slightly less than adequate. Implications are discussed. 相似文献

This informal piece offers tips to family caregivers, based on my personal experience as a social work educator who temporarily moved in with my mother, who lives with dementia. Lessons learned are distilled into 11 tips that are respectfully offered to other social work educators who have the blessing and the challenge of caring for their older loved ones. 相似文献
