ABSTRACT Home-based services are gaining more popularity than in years past. Therapists going into the home are exposed to various treatment issues that differ from those in a clinic or office setting. One of these issues is that of structuring the therapeutic process. Much has been written about the structure and stages of clinic-based therapy; however, little is known about the process of home-based therapy. This paper will delineate four phases of home-based therapy which the in-home therapist can use as a guide to provide faster and more effective services.

This study addresses the limited knowledge in the field on how men initially engage in domestic abuse treatment. Interviews were conducted with a subsample of the men (n = 8), all of the facilitators (n = 4), and an engagement instrument was completed by facilitators on the full sample (N = 95). Facilitator scores confirmed men's engagement in group and that it increased over time. A majority of men and facilitators identified “learning things” as most important in the engagement process. Key elements of group process men described included the importance of learning from each other's stories, and all facilitators observed the support exchanged between the men. Research and group work implications are discussed.

The purpose of this article is to illustrate, through teaching examples and student logs, a technique, called “check-in” routinely used in the author's group-work classes. Check-in is a process where students are invited, in the beginning of each class, to share their struggles, questions, dilemmas, accomplishments, and failures related to their group-work learning. Check-in requires students to listen and offer support, ideas, challenges, and guidance to each other. The goal of check-in is to help students develop their group-work skills and knowledge. Integrating democratic teaching practice with group stage development theory, particularly beginnings and middles, this article explores the process, complexities, and skills inherent in the check-in process. Implications for group-work practice skills are discussed.

This paper presents a historical overview of the Tuckman model describing the stages of group development. Created by Bruce W. Tuckman in 1965 and revised by Tuckman and Mary Ann Conover Jensen in 1977, the model presents the well-known stages of forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. This model has a unique history in that it was initially popular among HRD practitioners and later became common in academic literature as well. Its significance was a reflection of its time, responding both to the growing importance of groups in the workplace and to the lack of applicable research. This paper uses a literature review to trace the history of the model in terms of field practice and academic research.
